    Student Teaching!

Yes, it's getting very close! Starting on Monday I begin student teaching. I'm very excited, but also really nervous. Everything I've worked for and done the last 3.5 years comes down to the next 14 weeks. Wow. I'm sorry ahead of time if I'm even more scarce than I am now, but I'll do what I can I just thought I'd let everyone know about the exciting new adventure I get to experience... that is all

Ok, first off: Do NOT strangle the little bastards. Or their parents, who will refuse to see them as anything other than perfect little angels. It will be tempting, but don't do it.

We talked about this in our orientation days. In the "old days" the teacher was always right. But in this day and age the child is always right. It's just how things are. The disadvantage to being a student teacher is that parents may try to take advantage of us. However, we can listen to them but we have to tell them that our supervising teacher needs to hear it too. We'll see how things go. Hopefully I won't have to deal too much with that situation.

    Congratulations!

    What grade level(s) or ages?

    A Smile

A smile cost nothing, but gives so much.

It enriches those who receive it,
without making poorer those who give.
It takes but a moment, but the memory
    of it sometimes lasts forever.

None is so rich or mighty that he
    can get along without it,
and none is so poor but that
he can be made rich by it.

A smile creates happiness in the home,
    fosters goodwill in business,
and is the countersign of friendship.

It brings rest to the weary,
cheer to the discouraged, sunshine to the sad,
and it is nature's best antidote for trouble.

Yet it cannot be bought, begged, borrowed,
or stolen, for it is something that is of no
value to anyone until it is given away.

Some people are too tired to give you a smile.
Give them one of yours, as none needs a smile
so much as he who has no more to give.

Well, 3 days down. It seems like the days are long, but the first week is almost over. I have a very good group of students. Obviously there's the ones who act out, but overall they are good at following rules. I taught my first lesson today to the 5 3rd graders I have in my room. I thought it went well, then again it was about money and most kids know money very early. I'm excited to start teaching more, although I'm a little nervous about those "flop" lessons I'm bound to have... oh well

"flop" lessons are where it seems like absolutely nothing is being taught. You plan something you think is going to go over well, but just does not work out.
I'm heading into my 4th week tomorrow. I am not as nervous as I was a couple weeks ago although tomorrow and tuesday are a little nerve racking because my college supervisor is coming for a visit. It's always a little unnerving to see her writing constantly as I'm trying to teach... oh well. I'll get through it (as long as there isn't a snow day... i've heard we're supposed to get a storm or something)
The lesson planning is going to be the end of me, 3 hours of work for 20 minutes of teaching. It's worth it but still wearing me down (just because they have to be damn near perfect when I hand them to my supervising teacher). Besides the fact that I'm just getting over being terribly sick (I only missed one day of the lessons I was supposed to teach so that was good). Hopefully I'll stay healthy for the remainder of my student teaching term!
