I test drove a 2005 SRT10 today.
On my way home from work today, i took the scenic route, I decided to stop at the local car dealer to see what they had. Well, there sat a Silver 2005 Dodge SRT10. You know, with the viper engine!
So I hop off my bike and walk around it. Of course a salesperson runs over to me thinking he had a sure buyer, I'm sure. He hands me the keys, so I climb in.
I pushed the start button and I was disappointed in what I heard. It sounded a lot like my wife's car, which is a 4 banger! Took it out for a drive, and again I was disappointed. Yeah, it's got some power, but not near what I expected. It's got the Viper engine for crying out loud! It rode nice and had good steering, but that's about all I'll give it.
Oh, the seats were comfy as well.
All in all, I was not impressed. I would have figured that the SRT10 would at least push you into the seat if you punched it. Nope. The transmission was weird as hell. Had some odd shift points.
My Mustang is more fun to drive.

Searched for lady slippers
But instead
Found blackberry riots and
Desiccated branches
An old skid road
Brought ghost ferns and

Skunk cabbage
While waves wrapped
Intricate lacings of weeds
'Round mule spinners

Were hard enough to make
The sun turn tail and
Tender enough to attract me

No. I should have though. He REALLY wanted me to bring my Mustang in so he could "inspect" it and make me an offer on it.

Plenty you can do to that engine in the aftermarket department.

Plus, the mileage is actually better in the Stang. I can get 30 on the highway at 80 mph. The SRT10 is rated for 9 city and 12 highway!

Could it be possible that the Viper might weigh less than the SRT10 truck, therefore allowing the Viper to throw you back in the seat more? Maybe the engine was detuned for truck use?

The weight thing is most likely the problem, but still I think it would have had more get up and go. I remember when It first came out, all the car mags were gaga over the damn thing. I'm really not seeing why, but that's just me.
The freakin engine didn't even sound healthy. I know V10's have a sound all of their own, work truck used to be a v10, but this thing really sounded sick.
Oh well. Not my truck.

That truck is already making 500 ponies. It gets sucky gas mileage due to the fact that it is a truck (read aerodynamics of a brick). The Viper engine is a 10 cylinder gas guzzler. The only +500 hp motor from any factory not hit with a gas guzzler tax is in a C6 Corvette Z06 (427 LS7). In order to make your 4.6 hit 500 hp you would have to upgrade your transmission and clutch if you are a manual. Add in labor and the parts to hit that power mark and you might as well look at used Vipers.

I've got an auto, and can actually do all the work my self.

Hence the reason I bought a Stang. So I can do all the mods myself. the two most important things if I want 600 horse in my car are changing the axles to 33 splines, and beefing up the bottom end on engine. What I'll prolly end up doing is buying a bare block and going from there. That's a few years down the road though.
I'll be going with a twin screw SC as well.

I forgot, a higher stall torque converter would be a good thing.

Here are the performance specs on that truck.

In my opinion you would be better served by getting a 03-04 cobra. IRS, boost ready engine, and you can upgrade the SC to easily hit 600 rear wheel hp. All of this could be done fairly cheaply compared to other cars at that hp level.
All you would need is exhaust, pulleys, and the upgraded SC.
For example, check out this guys Cobra on my car site.

What's the point of buying a fast vehicle, when you can make the one you have faster? For what I'd pay for the Cobra, or a viper or even that truck, I'd be WAY over what it would cost to make the mods to the car I already own.

And IRS isn't really all that it's cracked up to be. In my opinion anyways.

Last week I tried putting a skull shift knob in my truck and broke the gear shift off and skinned my knuckles.
Ok not really. But I felt left out.

Just for nsb a couple of cobra videos. Even though I not a ford guy (because they suck) I give props to the 03-04 cobras.

Sheesh... The SRT10 has a 0-60 in a lazy 5.2 seconds - Not as bad as a Crown Vic, but what isn't? That's sad when a truck can outrun a Crown Vic.
The 2009 version of my 6-cyl 250 HP Mitsu Galant gets 0-60 in 6 seconds when you throw it in manual mode, essentially the same as my 2005 6-cyl Galant- Still beats the pants off a Crown Vic, and who's gonna notice that 0.8 seconds compared to that SRT? At least it doesn't cost as much as my house!
Gawd - I drove a Police Impalla interceptor the other day - Compared to my car I thought something was wrong with it too. Pitiful. I didn't time it accurately, but MUCH worse than the CV's 8+ seconds 0-60.
I'm told that our 8-cyl Chargers are pretty hot - They won't let me drive those
The C.O.P.'s usually get the thrill of driving a Sable with about 10 HP... If we peddle like the Flintstones
I'll be glad when our Dodge magnum gets the decals & lights on it so we can use it. Ours is pretty sweet, but still under-powered.
