just paid $5+ a gallon for gas
Yup, first fillup driving the beast again in 2.5 years and I didn't feel like driving 80miles one way for the cheap gas (at 4.20/gal) so I went to the closest station (30 miles away) and gas was 5.08/gallon for the cheap stuff. Was on 1/4 tank and it cost 120. Talk about a dent in the wallet

OMG, that must of hurt!
I heard on the news today that a full service station in the city went over the $5 mark, Ouch!
Your location, 64.3° N 149.1° W, aren't you closer to the pipelines, shouldn't gas be cheaper for you? Oh, but that gas goes over seas, right? Real shame where these gas prices have gone and are going!

I filled up yesterday at just under $12 a gallon thanks to the fuel strike, and it cost me $160 and that was without my tank being on the red!

I don't understand that at all... At the refinery gate it should be cheaper than that, since there's no transportation costs involved, and the oil itself isn't being bought on the world markets...
Of course it will fetch world market prices, however, so I wouldn't be too surprised if you're getting your gas from California, and Alaskan gas is being sent to Japan or something.

It cost me $4.15 to fill my scooter at $3.99 a gallon, that'll only get me a friggin week! As soon as I can find a scooter that gets more than 90 mpg I'm off of this gas guzzler!!!
Insert witty comment and disclaimer here.

It is very very close to $4.00 a gallon here, which seems to be about the norm or a little lower than most. My wife has a Jeep Commander and I have never wished for a smaller engine than right now................

$4.30 on the Oregon Coast. At the rate they are going, they will be delivering gas in armored vehicles by the end of the year.

Hey Donut, it sounds like your scoot is working well for you. Had to put mine in the shop this weekend for a potential clutch problem but if that's it it should be covered under warranty. I just want to get it back so I can save some bucks.

I heard another news story this weekend that a plug-in Hybrid car is nearing production. It is essentially a totally-electric car with a 50-100+ mile battery range depending on the size battery pack option you buy.
That means that most people can plug it in overnight, and not use a drop of gas on their round trip to work. The gas generator is only used in emergencies when you need to go more than 100 miles.
It uses the new polymer lithum batteries that weigh almost nothing compared to lead/Acid batteries, and don't explode like Lithium-Ion batteries do when they short out.
Not surprisingly, the major oil companies see the handwriting on the wall - They are throwing a lot of money into both battery research/manufacturing and are considering a major move into electric power generation.
I think with this car, we'll finally see gas demand drop dramatically, and demand for nuclear power plants will resurface, moving us away from being dependant on the Mid-East. Perhaps Hydrogen Fusion research will also be stepped up, which would eliminate most of the posionous radioactive waste.
Using this model, what we may see is service stations providing battery quick-charges and exchanges as well as gas - Where instead of buying a tank of gas, you simply pay for a quick-charge, of if you don't have time for that, trade your battery tray for a charged one.
I forget the exact equivalent cost of electricity versus gasoline, but I think it works out to about 25 cents per gallon, even factoring in the cost of the batteries over their 5-10 year expected life (after the batteries get into mass production of course - they will initially be very expensive to cover cost of research and development).
