    The time has come

    Yes
    It is here
A time that I have dreaded for awhile
I have limped along with my old laptop for several yrs now
    I have a Sony Vaio...top of the line in its day...big screen..etc
It has seen better days...then last week I decided to give it a "milk bath" while checking my email, rushing for work and trying to eat cereal....

    I decided on this one http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/product_detail.do?storeName=st orefronts&landing=rts_notebook &category=rts_notebook&orderfl ow=1&a1=Display&v1=17.0%26quot %3B&product_code=FE694UA%23ABA &catLevel=2

I ordered it...arrived next day ...I was impressed....

30 mintues into set-up the screen faded to black....the pretty lil blue lights were all "lit" up....I rebooted 1000000000000000 times...no screen....

I called tech support.....of course he couldnt speak clear English and I speak with a southern cajun drawl....(you get the pic)..

Well, to make a short story long.....my brand new HP notebook is on its way back to Memphis TN where it is from.....my Ccard is to be credited in 5 business days...etc etc
    So
I am in the market again...What type PC do you have? What do you like? What dont you like about it?

    Please share your experiences ......

I currently use a Lenovo notebook PC. It works very well and I have no complaints. I've heard the warranty service is good, but I don't know because nothing in it has malfunctioned in the 2 years I've been using it!

I used to have Dell notebook PCs, and they also worked very well and had a great warranty service where they would send a technician to my home to fix anything that went wrong. They started breaking after 3-4 years, but that happens to all computers probably. The technical support people for Dell were in India and there were long hold times and I sometimes had difficulty communicating with them due to linguistic and cultural differences, but in the end they always fixed the problem. I also liked how Dell could build a computer to my exact specifications, with only the stuff I needed and nothing else. I got the maximum amount of RAM and the best pentium chip available, and the least expensive options for everything else.

    Good luck with your purchase!

I have a Dell Inspiron laptop that is 2 years old and still strong. I have minimal battery life anymore and probably need to replace that but otherwise the thing is a work horse and I love it.

That being said I'm not a Microsoft fan anymore and I'm seriously considering a Macbook for my next purchase. Unfortunately they are limited in their hardware options and you end up paying for a lot of power.

What problems does Vista have? I'm still using Windows XP (got my computer in the final days of XP).

1998?!? You're using a 10-year-old computer and it still works? My computers die after about 3-4 years.

I am on a MacBook which is my wife's idea as I used a PC at work and one that I had seized. Well This Mac is so easy to use, I get no spam, regular updates and battery life is good. You can also run both Mac and PC programs on it. The graphics are very good which I don't know how to use but my wife does. It was $1300 with the 2 Gig hard drive or what ever it's called. I use it when my wife goes to the doctor I sit in the car and log onto what ever is out there to use.

I don't play games. My wife does her digital photo's on it.

We haven't made the jump to notebooks just yet. Not wanting to use vista just yet. My wife is into gaming and plays quite a bit of SIMS. Otherwise we have two Dell desktops and a Sony Vaio desktop. Right now the Sony is sick and needs to be cleaned out. The Dells are working just fine for us but mine could use a memory upgrade. We also like how Dell will custom build you a computer, which is what they did for us.

I am surprised that Term hasn't chimed in yet. He seems to be quite the computer expert and his mom works for IBM iirc.

My IT expert friend told me that Vista Premium is "OK"......just stay about from the basic Vista Home....and Vista Business would be wasted on what I am using the PC for.........

vista has problems with business software; it is great for gamers though. It seems that the companies are going to the Mickey D's type of use (you know touch a picture of something and it does it for you) I have a 5 yr old gateway that (2 actually) that I had to replace the ram on recently but other than that they're both fine. Dell probably has the best customer support. Since you mentioned an IT guy, get him to recommend.

I have a Dell XPS laptop that I bought a few months back at Best Buy for $720. It's one of the best purchases I've ever made. It's my travel laptop.

I "upgraded" it from Vista to XP. There are websites out there that tell you how to do it and where to get the XP drivers you're going to need for setup. You can burn all those to a CD before you do the install and you'll be good to go.

Yes it does work. My CD/DVD drive only works part of the time but I can still get online and that is whats important.

I have an IBM Thinkpad from Lenovo, and I absolutely love it. It even has that neat little fingerprint scanner for security purposes. Best computer I've ever owned.
