Well next week will be my second attempt at getting started with my application with a department in the great Northwest!!!!!! First trip got canceled by Gustav, looking good for next week, so far...............lol

Website has WA dept hiiring listings and lateral entry (out of state cert credit) process. Two week lateral academy. Pay varies a lot from big urban depts to rural SO or Podunk PD.

Now hriing for Trooper. They will schedule out-of-state applicants to minimize travel. I was there 20+ yrs of my 27 yrs. I worked with, or did BI on people hired from NY, LA, CA, IL, MT, Detroit PD, NOPD (former dep chief now in Nashville TN), military police, etc. The upper age liimit is late 50's. The people I have worked with came from all over the US, active LEO, military retirees from all branches, retirees from LE in other states, retirees from private sector, corrections, and no experience at all, etc.

Trooper is general authority LEO, traffic LE is primary. Take-home cars. Specialties: crash reconsrtuction, criminal investigations, aviation (pilots), harbor security force parallels USCG, very active K-9 units for drugs and explosives, narcotics and organized crime unit, JTTF, DEA and local DTF, polygraph services, missing children clearinghouse, criminal asset forfeitures, etc.

Also Forensic Science is a good career track, (where the academic genius types are). Must have a science related BA degree. Advanced degrees encouraged on career path. MS degrees are common in these ranks and more become PhD candidates. Specialize in fingerprints, DNA and serology, ballistics, toolmarks, chemicals...full service crime labs all over the state.

Well I wont be making this trip either...................this time I am getting hosed by my command staff. I was advised Saturday by my Sgt., that our Lt. advised him that we were too short handed on our squad to let me take my vacation, Wed @ Thur. I could get my vacation if I could find someone to work for me, you believe that crap, a department this large and I need to find someone to work for me so I can take my vacation time I have earned. Well I smell paperwork coming on real quick, can you say grievance!!!!!!!

So I haven't decided if I will try again next month, since last month I lost $150.00 on my ticket and this time lost the entire cost, $366.00

That really blows, we had issues with getting time off in our precinct too (I am sure they still do but I am out now, no more denied days for me). In our department vacation picks are contractual and they can not be denied, anything else is subject to the needs of the department. There is an 18% rule, only that amount can be off at any given time. Vacation picks account for 12%, the rest comes from sick or chart time. There is a pending lawsuit initiated by the PBA in regards to denied time off and FSLA time.

Hopefully it works out for you, can you get someone to swap days off with you? A promise of working someones weekend may help? Times are tough but maybe someone will do the right thing for you, too bad your boss did not speak up for you to the LT.

Maybe it is a conspiracy to keep you there!
