My Grandfather
My grandfather was born the youngest of 15 children. His family couldn't afford to feed him and gave him up for adoption. When he was a teenager, he joined the Marines and fought in the Korean War, sustaining wounds and spending the rest of his life with bullets in his body. After the war, he came home and became a police officer in Denver, got married, and had two children. After he divorced, he married my grandmother (who already had four children), and they moved to Oregon. He was a police officer in Salem, Oregon until he retired, then bought a bar. If he wasn't taking care of the bar, he was spending time with his family and his dogs, being both a loving and strict father and grandfather figure. While gruff, he always had a smile for those he loved. On Thursday morning, at about 0200, he passed away. While he will be missed immensely, he was both a great family member and an outstanding American. We'll be scattering his ashes tomorrow in the ocean so that he can be with his Marine buddy "George".
