I believe this petition has been posted on the old LEF forum, and I know it has been around for several years.
The petition itself has a link showing a post in Feb 2007 that there are no plans for NYC to name any street after Mumia.
It appears that there was an online petition to name a street after Mumia, and the one you posted was formed in response not to name a street after him.

Thank you for your e-mail concerning your opposition to an alleged proposal to rename a street in Harlem after Mumia Abu Jamal. I appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts on an issue that is so important to you personally.
As you may know, requests for commemorative street renamings such as the one you described must be formally submitted to the Council by the Council Member in whose district the street is located.
I had members of my staff look into the matter, and was informed that the Council has not received any such request for Mumia Abu Jamal.
Furthermore, commemorative street renamings are generally awarded only posthumously. To the best of my knowledge, Mumia Abu Jamal is still alive, and is therefore not eligible to have a street renamed after him.
Thank you again for taking the time to write to me with your concerns.
If I can assist you further in any way, please do not hesitate to e-mail me directly by visiting the Council’s website at www.nyccouncil.info and following the link to contact the Speaker at the bottom of the page."
Sincerely,Christine C. Quinn

I would very much like to see a street named after Faulkner though. Perhaps you guys up there in the Big Apple can use the attention generated by the Mumia spoof to get that done.
Consider me signed to any petition to that regard.

"It's a great life. You risk your skin catching killers and the juries turn them loose so they can come back and shoot at you again. If your honest , your poor your whole life. And , In the end , you wind up dying all alone on some dirty street. For what? For nothing. For a tin star."

My first thought was "Is this still going on?" I thought the issue was resolved.
How about someone start a petition to have this fool, Mumia Abu Jamal exterminated once and for all and never have his name mentioned again. Ever.

Was told this by another member: "that petition has been around for a while right after I signed it last year I sent a email to christine quinn asking her about it she( or her people) emailed me back that it was NOT going to happen."
Thanks for the info, I think what sprouted the petition to start circulating again is the release of the book Murdered by Mumia
