Never had that happen before so severe. The worst I've ever experienced was waking up with only a sore neck due to an awkward sleeping position or something. I would recommend taking a hot shower to loosen up a bit.

It happens to me if I sleep with my head at a strange angle. Hope the pain goes away soon!

It sounds like someone needs to massage the muscles in your neck.
If it happens a lot I would wonder if you need a different pillow?

I got that when I started using one of those contour pillows. Now the contour pillow goes between my knees when I sleep, and I have a chiropractor.

Pinched nerve. Go see a good chiropractor and get those muscles loosened up and your neck realigned.
