    My First Poll

OK. I am going to post my first poll, and it is going to be in 2 parts. Here is the deal ,in this poll I am going to give 3 scenarios,In this forum ,I want CIVILIANS only to post their response,I am going to post the same question in the verified section for LEOs' and in 5 days will compare answers

    WHICH IS THE SCARIEST????

    1) You get a call, barricaded subject, has weapons in house, threatening to kill anyone who approaches.

2)Burglar alarm at warehouse,on arrival, you observe a door forced open. You enter said building to clear same.If bad guy is in there ,he knows where you are,you dont know where he is.

3)On patrol you get behind a land ark(Lincoln-Cadi. etc) said vehicle is going 20 mph under the limit and weaving from lane to lane.Doesn't appear to have any occupants. You light it up and see a little puff of something whitish blue in color just above the drivers side headrest.(resembles hair)

Now ,which is the scariest thing,as a cop you would face in either of these 3 scenarios???

The scariest would be this question, which will reveal just how clueless I am!

Even though I've learned a lot here about the big picture of LEOs' insights about life, the universe, and everything, I'm actually pretty clueless about the details of police work and tactics (Bet that comes as a surprise to everyone here! ) But cluelessness has never stopped me from giving my opinion , so here goes:

I think 2) would be scariest, because you're alone and far from backup and don't know where the bad guy(s) are, how many of them there are, and what weapons they have, but they are likely to know all that about you. The unknown is the scariest.

    1) is very scary as well, but at least you know what you're dealing with and can deal with it on your own terms, with the proper preparation, at a time of your choosing. You can wait for backup, get every weapon at your disposal, put on extra body armor, position yourself and your vehicle in the best position possible, etc. and confront the subject on your own terms. You can get the electricity turned off in the house so the subject is in the dark (why you wear equipment to help you see in the dark or shine a blinding flashlight on the subject when you enter), throw in tear gas, get sharpshooters to shoot the subject, trick the subject by pretending to be the pizza deliveryman, etc. Since your scenario doesn't mention hostages, you don't have to put yourself at risk to protect them. You can be pretty confident that you would be justified in killing the subject if necessary, given that the subject has already unequivocally claimed to be armed and dangerous, so you can act quickly and not worry about things like figuring out whether your shooting would be justified.

As for 3), I have no idea what the "la little puff of something whitish blue in color just above the drivers side headrest.(resembles hair)" might mean. I assume something happened to incapacitate the driver, but why is whitish-blue hair supposed to be especially scary? What could whitish blue hair mean? Not only is the driver dead, he/she died with hair full of weird dye? The driver took a drug that turned his/her hair whitish blue? The mafia tortured the driver by dying his/her hair whitish blue before putting him/her unconscious behind the wheel of a car? The driver is really an alien from a planet where everyone has whitish-blue hair? There's a whitish-blue sleeper program in the driver's cybernetic brain? In any case, this doesn't seem so scary because the car is moving 20 mph under the limit and if the driver is conscious he/she will probably stop for you and if not the car will probably come to a stop on its own one way or another soon--if the latter I guess you could call it in so that other LEOs can set up barricades to divert traffic away from this road and wait for the car to crash or otherwise come to a stop on its own, at which point you can wake the driver up and demand to know what on earth possessed him/her to dye his/her hair whitish blue.

Because you're scared of the possibility that the whitish-blue puff is a sleeper program in the driver's cybernetic brain!

#2 would be the scariest for me going into a warehouse not knowing who and how many are in there. The fact that they may see me before i can see them would make knots in my tummy.

Hmm, with #1 - While the threat is known, this one will be on the 6 o`clock news. Aside from the danger to myself and the second guessing of every action taken there's going to be an additional crowd to control for their own safety and mine.

The lack of knowledge on #2 and #3 are scary. Chances may well be #2 is a dumb thief who is using his knowledge of where I am to run any other direction, but I could be walking in on one gang taking out rival's meth lab with a flamethrower. #3 sounds like grandma's out driving and trying to follow the road by staring at the yellow line.

I would have to say #2. You don't know where your enemy is, and he knows where you are. You can not defend well against something you can not see. Even with backup it would suck because a warehouse is large and 100 cops couldn't cover it completely without the guy getting at least one attack in.

#1 would suck, but you know where your enemy is and you have him contained (to the best of your knowledge) in a small enough area. Negotiations could be attempted or you could just nuke the fucker out. I would also think that as a patrol officer you wouldn't have to worry too long because they would most likely be calling in the tactical unit.

#3 wouldn't be great, but it seems like the most easily controlled situation of the three. The puff could be grandma's hair, or crack smoke from some big ex-felon, on parole, dead set on not going back. Either way, multiple officers would be able to control the situation, and if he is cracked out and head's toward you, at least one should score a headshot.

    OK gang,here it is,
Now for the big picture, this post was actually done "Tongue in cheek" after I came off shift where I stopped an 80 something year old,4 foot nothing wisp of a grandma on her way to bingo, now in the south ,we have great respect for our elders or else they will take you to the woodshed,I was merely going to warn her about coming to a complete stop.By the time she got finished dressing me down for making her lateI was almost in tears and damn near promised to come to her house and wash and wax her 70s' model Lincoln Continental that she could barely see over the dash of(even with her cushion)

In actuallity,#2 is the one I dislike the most.

Just for the record, verifieds and civilians both voted #2 the most.,Guess we have learned our civies a thing or 3

Great poll Mav, even though I was never on the road when I was a Det. Deputy, except for ride alongs, from what I learned at the academy and subsequent training #2 was the obvious choice in scariness. The unknown is always scary. I think the main thing is that civilians in this forum are pretty intuitive when it comes to the dangers that LEO's face daily.

My dad, I miss him every day.

Woohoo! I got the right answer! Who says overthinking doesn't pay?

I actually took the bluish-white hair literally and didn't know it was supposed to signify an old woman. I've heard of the term "blue hair" used to refer to an old woman, but I didn't think her hair would actually be blue. When I saw your description I imagined something more like this:

I hope the day never comes that I don't learn at least one thing.
