Christmas Pictures - Photographers (and others) Weigh In

OK, so I do freelance photography and have some portrait shoots coming up for Christmas pictures. Granted, I can do the whole "evergreen trees", "snowflakes", and "snow" backgrounds, but someone please give me some ideas that would be acceptable that don't scream CHEESE. The shoots I get tend to be because I take pictures that have some originality to them and I'm having a hard time coming up with anything but the traditional on these. I have a few ideas (plain/textured backgrounds, etc) but I still want them to be Christmasy. Help!

How about just winter outdoors, Some of my favorite pictures are being in the wilderness or woods. If you want it christmasy get the family to where a santa hat. Thats just me. I tried putting santa hats on the dogs but they want to play with the hats instead.

Are you working digitally or the old fashion way?

Digital you can use your most favorite christmas scene, you can get ideas from Christmas Cards. I like Thomas Kinkade but some find him too candied and cheesey. He does have some great winter and christmas scenes and does wonderful things with light.

If you had to make a set for the back ground you will be more limiited

I shoot digitally, but I haven't really gotten into digital backgrounds. If you have any tips for that, that would be great...and it might be a new direction to go in.

Outdoors pictures are always good, so I might go with that too. The other thing I was thinking was go to the mall and use some of their scenery there. They always have tons of neat decorations and it might be a nice change from the standards.

I have not done it in years, but it was not that difficult if you have the right photoshop programs. The program had a select few backgrounds to pick from, you could import your own and even scan them in. You crop your image and place it on the background. It is not that difficult once you get the hang of it. I am not sure if you would want to start playing around with it now, but it is something you can try in the future. We had Adobe PhotoShop Professional on our old computer, but I think there are simpler programs out there these days.

You should try reindeer ears for the dogs. TJ, the rascal the he is, can be Rudolf if you can find him a red clown nose to wear.
