Why can't I ever...
...get my English muffins to toast the way they do at the restaurant? They're hardly ever browned (unless my toaster burns them) and they're not very crispy at all.

Restaurant probably uses those commercial toaster with wider slots, they toast at a higher heat but further away from the heat element. Some diners throw them under the broiler to brown them too.
I have a cusinart combo toaster/convection oven and it toasts English muffins just right.
