    Cool marching band (USC)

Came across this video, it's pretty cool. I gotta say I love college marching bands, but this takes the cake:

I liked how the USC band actually did "Almost Easy" by Avenged Sevenfold in their halftime performance at the Rose Bowl. I don't care much for school bands, but that at least was cool that they did something untraditional.

I like watching a good show by a marching band.

Of course, IMO, it goes without saying the USMC Marching Band is the best. Not to slight the US Army and US Coast Guard bands which I've seen also. I've been to West Point a few times for their evening parades and it's great experience. Also made the relatively short trek to the Coast Guard Academy and watched them strut their stuff. They're damn good.

One of these days, I'll make it to "8th and I" for the big Marine show. Gotta see the drill team in person one more time also.

Although not a marching band, I got to see the "The President's Own" United States Marine Band once and they were flawless.

I really enjoy marching bands. As much as it pains me to say so, I think that Ohio State's marching band is quite good.

Having spent four years playing the snare in the drumline in a competitive marching band, I love watching these videos.

mavriktu - My guess is that first video of the USC Trojan Marching Band as recorded after the football game was completed. Many bands not only play a full halftime show, but will stick around and even give a post-game performance. Some of the post-game shows may include a standing show only, rather than a full-out marching piece. The video you posted was, um...entertaining? Reminded me of the movie "Drumline" that portrays more of the African American styles of marching bands. While it is fun to watch, I prefer more precision and musicianship in performances.

Drum Corp International, or D.C.I., is more my style. These men and women devote their lives to their bands and spend months practicing and traveling the country putting on shows. You have to be the best of the best to even be accepted into these bands and the competition is FIERCE. Furthermore, you don't get paid to be in these bands - you pay them to be a part of it!

    Here are some examples:

First, the Cavaliers. An all male group, this is a great example of the precision of marching displayed in D.C.I. Although the song isn't a favorite of mine, pay close attention to shapes they create. This is just one part of their 2006 show, entitled "The Machine":
YouTube - The Cavaliers 2006 at DCI - The Machine

And my favorite show of all time, the 2002 show "Frameworks" by the Cavaliers again. It's over 9 minutes long, but worth the watch:

10-42Adam, I concur. Having spent four years playing the tuba in a competitive marching band, I love watching these videos. The DCI bands that I was exposed to were the Concord Blue-Devils, Vanguard, and Valley Fever. I have participated in many a half-time show and band competition in my high school days.

Glad to see someone else on here knows a little bit about this stuff! I'm also a big fan of the Blue Devils and the Vanguard - two more top notch groups. I don't follow it like I used to, but I sure do miss it a bunch.

I did the jazz band thing, too. Great thing about doing the football and basketball games is that you got to see the game for free. So, which instrument did you play?

There are points where you can't hear the band because the crowd is just that loud. And for good reason. Definitely shows why this is the BEST DAMN BAND IN THE LAND!
