    Scanner/Portables

    Another thread got me thinking:

How many of you LEOs listen to a scanner or your issue portable at home when you are off?
How many of you civilians out there listen to one at home?
I did when I first started in the job but it did not take me long to want to get away from it. I live in the City where I work so now I only turn my portable on if I hear A LOT of sirens, the air unit circling for a long time, or in instances of very bad weather.

My dad lived with us and he had a scanner up until we went digital. It seemed like I could never get away from the radio and at times it got on my nerves. I was also worried about him or my wife hearing the incident on the scanner if something were to happen to me.

I don't and my family didn't. I remember that my grandparents did, though, while my uncle was working - they lived in the same precinct in which he worked.

No, I surely don't. The only time I've left my radio on while off duty is to bleed out the battery before charging it up. In fact, the second I call in 10-42, I turn the radio off generally.

I only listened to a scanner before I became a cop. That was back when I was a big old wannabe.

It's not that I have any aversion to hearing what's going on, it's just that I don't care anymore. My work time is my work time, and my personal time is my personal time. My job is a big enough part of my life as it is without me trying to make it all of my life.

I Fall into the NEVER category. Even when I'm working I don't have the scanner on in my patrol car. We have the ability to scan and talk to many agencies. 99% of the time I don't scan other departments traffic. I have learned to love peace and quiet.

Yeah I don't scan other agencies because, admittedly so, it does distract my attention from our channels.

    +1

I can't imagine ever in my life wanting to sit and listen to police radio when I wasn't working.

When I worked uniform, I sometimes worked an adjacent district to another precinct that was on another radio frequency. I usually put my handheld on that channel just so I'd know if something was coming down close to me, but it wasn't for entertainment.

I used to listen off duty, then I got smart. My parents still listen now and then, but since they live in another state I dont have to worry about them hearing me!!

I turn my Linc and the WT on about 30 min prior to beginning tour just so I know what is going on. With my current assignment I do not go to a formal roll call anymore. Plus we get pass on email for major events.

I'm also in the "never" category. My mother-in-law used to date the jail admin for a small county in Oklahoma...it was always on at his house, and I always wondered why he didn't wanna turn it off at the end of the day.

I do, however, like to listen when I'm working off duty...I work a couple of times a month at a local movie theater and I like to listen for entertainment purposes, as that is a VERY boring deal.

I have one and normally turn it on about 30 mins before I go to work, to hear what's going on. Passing info on between shifts is hit and miss with us it seems, and occasionally important info doesn't get passed on. It also gives me an idea of what I'm getting into before I get to work (lots of calls, drunks, fights, a slow night, etc).

I'll also turn it on if I hear sirens in my neighborhood.

Other than that I don't listen to it.

Were I live I get very poor radio reception if I get any at all for my department.
Don't have a scanner for local, wouldn't be much to listen in on anyway if I did.
    So my answer is Never.

I grew up with a scanner in my house. I used to hear my dad's stuff all night long.

Once I got on the job I would only turn my portable on while I was getting ready. Now, it doesn't come on until I'm in the car and ready to roll. I'll occasionally turn it on in bad weather or if I hear more than a few sirens.

My dad is still on the job and listens off duty, as well as logs into our mobile cad system. I don't get it. When I'm off, I'm off.

I got one for my folks a couple years ago. It has a battery backup and weather. They live in the country and several tornadoes have come close. I programmed it so they can listen to the local fire departments in the area who are usually spotters.
I have one, but rarely use it.

I fall into the "sometime" category,if I hear a lot of sireeeeeeennnnnsssss,I might(at Daps insistenece usually),other than that, when we leave the house for a few hours I will turn it on ,just so potential burglars will here it(also at Daps insitence, like the patrol car in the driveway isn't a deterent),other than that,I call in 10-7(off duty) and click it before the dispatcher even acknowledges.

I never lived within the city of my jurisdiction, so I'd have to have a scanner that picked up another city or county's police calls.

Our dispatch will give lookouts on Santa on Christmas Eve. I'll try to catch that if I know what time they're doing it.

Aside from that, it stays off.

When I'm on duty in the car, I scan the other jurisdictions in the area where I'm working. I'm with the sheriff's office. We have a county PD plus several city police departments. I like to know what's going on around me.
