Prayer Request
I'll try to keep it brief, but God knows the last week I've had is nothing of the nature.
As some of you know, my youngest daughter has an underlying medical condition which is progressive. On saturday last week, she came down with a cough in the morning and by late afternoon I was calling 911 to get her to the local hospital. X-rays there confirmed lower left lobe pneumonia. Due to her underlying condition, the Critical Care Transport Team from Childrens Hospital Boston was dispatched to the local hospital and she was rushed into CHB at 3AM sunday morning and admitted to the ICU. By 7AM Sun., her right lung has partially collapsed along with the lower left lobe pneumonia. They ran a flu test and it came back positive for H1N1. The lung issues were complications from the mucous from the flu.
The next few days were tough, and she was on all the IV fixings you can imagine.....saline drip, potassium, dextrose, etc. She was given IV antibiotics along with tamiflu (not sure of spelling). She experienced severe aches, vomiting, nausea, dry heaves and fever in the 102-103 range. She needed help breathing and was on a bipap machine (a positive air pressure assisted breathing machine) along with 4 litres oxygen to help get her O2 saturations back up.
By wednesday she had improved quite well and things were moving forward but on thursday things started to go backwards a little and alot of the symptoms returned.
Over the course of thursday and friday, her left lung started to fill up and is now completely collapsed. Fortunately her right lung is now clear, so she remains on bipap but crashing and intubation are never more than a heartbeat away.
As of this morning her left lung remains with no air movement and the ICU team has brought in consult from the pulmonary team. I reviewed her most recent x-rays with the docs and in short it's not pretty. They are recommending that we consider having a bronchoscopy performed, in order to go in and see first hand what's going on inside the lung, which will require having her intubated. (failure of extubation due to the underlying condition is always a risk along with lung re-collapse due to weakened respiratory system) In performing the procedure the team would also flush the left lung with saline solution and suction out what they believe to be a large mucous plug which has caused the lung to fill and shut down. If we chose not to do this and continue the same protocol of chest PT, cough machine and deep suctioning via nasal catheter....it is possible that we could eventually clear up the lung. however, the longer it goes without being cleared out, the greater risk of developing a super infection and additional medical issues.
So, I turn to my brothers and sisters here on O.R. and am asking that if you can spare just a few moments in your day....could you kindly say a prayer for my little girl, ONCE AGAIN. She could really use all the prayers she can get. She is now on 7 days in the ICU and no idea yet when we'll get out of there.
Thank you in advance to each of you.
