Had to put my dog down....
I let my Rottie Zeus outside at 2 am Monday morning. I let him in about an hour later and his stomach was very swollen. I could tell right away something was wrong. I rushed him to the emergency vet and they did emergency surgery. He came thru the surgery at 06:30. I had to transport him to my vet at 0800. He never really recovered or responded to anything. The decision was made to put him to sleep that afternoon.
He was going on 11. The vet said that he had bloat. They really didn't know the cause but suspected cancer because of his age.

Very sorry about that Darin. As much as I bitch about my dogs, I would not be happy if I had to do what you did.
Go find another friend soon....best way to heal.

"It's a great life. You risk your skin catching killers and the juries turn them loose so they can come back and shoot at you again. If your honest , your poor your whole life. And , In the end , you wind up dying all alone on some dirty street. For what? For nothing. For a tin star."

I'm sorry for your loss. We had to do the same thing two years ago.

that sucks.
I've never had to put a dog down but I know I'm gonna lose it when I do.

Thanx all. The day after is not much better. It's a lil harder considering we had to put down our other dog on July 4th.

I'll have to agree here. I am surrounded by many "friends". Though they will never be able to replace the one you've lost, they sure do help to ease the process.
Very hard to do. I have been there myself with several dogs and cats over the years. They are part of the family. If you believe in heaven, you will see him again someday. And pardon the pun, All Dogs Go To Heaven.

I'm so sorry Darin. My dogs are like family to me so I understand your loss. Bloat occurs for several reasons, both known and unknown, and sometimes there is nothing that can be done despite the best intentions. You were a wonderful, caring owner til the end.

Very sorry for your loss. Dogs are cool because they don't give a dang who you are, what you have done or what you can do for them. They are just thrilled to hang out with you and be your bud.

It's the unconditional love thing. Cats on the other hand, take things on their own terms, but they show unconditional love at times too.

thats a shame. bloat is very common with large breeds. i had to put my great dane down when she was 4 because of bloat. its tough.

I "lease" a black lab.
I lived with her for two years when I roomed with a buddy who had just gotten her. She was very much my dog while I was there...we did everything together. I fed her, took her to the vet, etc. I only live down the block from him now, and I still have to go see her nearly every day. Sometimes I'll just go and lounge/nap on his couch with her for hours, sometimes it's just to feed her when my buddy's going to be late. Sometimes I steal her and bring her by my place to just hang out with me.
I can't imagine having to be there if she had to get put down.
I would definitely lose it.
