    Myth About Older Cars

The term they don't build them like they used to doesn't always apply to automobiles. See the video of 1959 model car crashing with a 2009 model car. Keep an eye on the passenger compartment.

Holy shit, I thought the '59 would have ripped the new car open like a tin can.

Say all you want about cars today being all plastic, but obviously the nerds that design them know what they are doing. That being said, I bet you don't do 1K in damage to the '59 if you hit a big racoon though!

Today's cars are light years safer than anything the planet has ever seen.

I've seen people crawl out of cars in wrecks I swore would have been fatal.

    I'm not surprised.

The cars today are built to transfer energy to where it needs to be, AWAY from the passenger compartment.

Like Mac said, I've been to several wrecks where you'd swear anyone within 50 ft of the car probably died, when in reality everyone in the car was uninjured or had non-life threatening injuries.

Then again, I've been to wrecks where no one should have suffered so much as a hang nail, but died because they weren't wearing their seat belt. Buckle up!

The penetration into the '59s passenger compartment is amazing.

I have also noticed a remarkable improvement on injury and death after a rollover. When I first started, a rollover was almost always guaranteed to be critical injuries or death. Now people walk away from many of them. It's amazing. I have to wonder how much seat belt laws/education is responsible for that.

Fifth Gear does a number of interesting crash tests. I was looking for one where they compared two minivans of the same model from different years with some dramatic differences in outcomes.

Here's something in between. An older Volvo wagon, a car well regarded for its safety record and a tank to boot, vs a new compact.

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hlig1se1xew"]YouTube - Renault Modus vs Volvo 940 GLE[/ame]

Of course what we've learned here is if you have a small rigid car you should find a big soft older car to run into. Probably best to avoid big new cars.

Now lets see what happens when that Modus or a Smart car meet head on with a Ford F-350 4x4 that weighs over 8,000lbs

For all but it's size, the F-350 is a dinosaur safety wise. Body on frame construction.

I don't know. I had a drunk driver pull in front of mine several years ago in a Honda accord. It ripped that car in half. The driver of that vehicle pulled far enough out that I hit right behind her seat. Everything behind her seat and back was gone on that car. The damage to my truck included a bent lisence plate frame, a cracked front grill, a dent on the hood the size of 2 quarters, a cracked headlight lense, and paint transfer on the front suspension and axle.

I drove away and her car was taken away in pieces. I still have the same bumper and license plate frame

Sure thing - that's just physics.

Now punch the F-350 into another F-350 and see what happens.

In the examples we are seeing here, small cars are winning against cars two and three times their size.

Still seems better not to crash in the first place to me

    *2 hours later*

Aha! Finally found that original video I was looking for. Already one dead Espace in the above video, here two more get smushed. Bad night for the French.

Interesting part here is the cars are 9 years apart in age, but have the same dimensions, basic design. On the outside they're twins.

Other interesting bit is the comment that the result for the occupants of the older car are influenced by design changes to the newer car. By stiffening up the new one to meet current standards it becomes safer for its occupants, but more of a battering ram to those in other cars. Anyhow, on with the show

    [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3l4YBf2tjag[/ame]

pgg - I looked and looked,(really did, mostly found biased Smart positive crap) but couldn't find a Smart vs Truck. I did find something much more disturbing though - evidence of mating.
