Hey Ducky!
While I was getting the mower out of the garage, I spotted something small running down the alley. I thought, you gotta be kidding! I walked out the back gate and there was a duckling high tailing it! My first thoughts were is it's headed towards the street and there are many alley cats on the prowl. I take off after this little fuzz ball as fast as I can (mind you, I have a bum left foot that does not have full range of motion). It gets out in the street and goes under a parked car, sh*t. I circle the car and it comes out and heads for my neighbors house. We both are running back and forth around this house as it is tracing the foundation. The tail just comes within reach a few times but it keeps just enough ahead of me. Finally, the poor duckling gets bogged down in some taller grass and I gently scoop it up. Proud of my handicapped athleticism, I look around to see if anyone in the neighborhood witnessed this. There was not a soul in sight and luckily the neighbors were not home either! The duckling's feet were droopy so that was a good sign that it was not stressed too much.
The new baby

I went back out and searched the alley for any more strays or even the mother. The nearest water is about 2 miles, this baby is no more than 2 days old. All I found were the two regular alley cats and no evidence of other birds. My gf has raised many ducks and geese so she knows how to handle and care for them.

OMG how utterly adorable!! Maybe a kiddie pool for a duck pond would let him get his paddling powers?
And Trojan, that was a gentlemanly way of saying you'd like to eat me.

No comment on eating fried duck

R.I.P. Woody
I just got home from KC and found out that Woody died Tuesday morning.
We had just identified the duckling as a wood duck and bought special food for it.
Long story short, my gf thinks there was an issue with the food that we bought.

Wow. Now I'm depressed.
There’s a promise I need you to make
While I’m gone you take care of the love
And I’ll deal with the hate.
Don’t worry about me; I’ll be all right
Just care for your children and sleep tight
I’ll keep you safe on my watch tonight

It is a beautiful day here, 79 degrees, 50% humidity. All the windows in the house are open, and I hear a squeaky sound outside.

The family is still nearby!
I will be outside most of the day and will have camera ready!
EDIT: Oh, and my running shoes on too. har
