Kitten Rescue Operation
So at our new place I've got an old grainery, that is connected to a shop.
For the past week or so, one of my barn cats has had her kittens (about 4 weeks old) in a corner on the second floor of the grainery. The grainery is old and rickety, but still structurally sound. Tonight I went out to take some pictures of our kittens.
I only located one, but could hear the others. I started nosing around and found a hole in the floor, directly above the shared wall between the shop and grainery. Three of the kittens fell through the hole, and down into the wall (about 8 feet). They were uninjured, but obviously trapped. A 4th kitten fell down the other side of the 2x4 in the wall.
My dad arrived to help me put a winch on my 4 wheeler and I told him that needed to be put on hold, as we had a rescue operation to conduct.
Unfortunately, my antiquated grainery took the brunt of our operation. The wall between me and the group of three kittens was a large panel of plywood. I was able to pop it off and liberate the kittens. The 4th kitten wasn't so easy. He/She was behind several 1x6's that were notched and grooved, and slid into each other. We had to measure the height and width to approximately where the kitten was, and cut a hole in my wall with a skil saw. The 4th kitten was successfully rescue at this point and reunited with the others. The 5th kitten (the only one that didn't fall down the hole) was also placed with the others on the FIRST floor.
I've done some research and apparently momma cat won't abandon them due to any human odors, and as long as they're close to where they belong, she'll care for them as she would have had they not fallen down the hole. But just in case, I'll be checking on them tomorrow to make sure. If she doesn't come back I'll fix them up with a bottle and some milk replacer.
Either way it was kinda fun, and I wanted to share.

Good Job!
Try to find out if there are any TNR programs in your area, if so you can have all of them spayed or neutered at no cost. You can also take a course to get certified to TNR, once you receive the certification you can bring them to the ASPCA or Humane Society yourself. I was able to take the course for free but from what I understand you can take it online as well for a small fee. Check with your local humane society or pet groups for more info, I know it is a national program Here is the NY number for the mobile spay clinic, maybe they cab give you your local contact info. Number is 877 772-9692

Thanks everyone!!
And a quick update -
I checked last night, and once today, and momma cat is back with her kittens. And I saw her nursing them both times. They're now in a penned area (momma can get in and out, but the kittens can't) with NO holes in the floor. No one has greater love than this, to lay down ones life for ones friends - John 15:13

You were my inspiration for my rescue! haha
I actually realized that about 20 minutes after I posted the update....but was to lazy to come back and update it further.
The winch is mounted but I haven't wired it yet. We needed to fab a plate for it because the "universal" mount was junk. If we put the mount in first, we couldn't get the winch on. And if we put the winch on the mount, none of it would fit in. It is meant to go inside the front of the pushbumper on my 4 wheeler, so it's a tight squeeze. It's a real bastard. No one has greater love than this, to lay down ones life for ones friends - John 15:13
