1911
I'm looking to buy a 1911 .45, but I don't have a fortune to spend. I don't need a fancy race gun with a big name and a price to match. It will not be my duty gun. I've been looking at the Rock Island 1911 Tactical FS Nickel. All I've read indicates they are a good pistol. Anyone have any experience with them?

Remington just released theirs, called the R1. Very decent price point, supposedly - and Remington made a boatload of 1911's back in the day.
Rock Island pistols are made in the Phillipines, IIRC. Don't know anything about them at all.I'm your huckleberry...

There are a couple companies out there that make decent military spec guns for a good price. Taurus makes a 1911 also, though I've heard it is hit and miss with them

I've heard that a Charles Daly (also imported from the PI I think...) can often be a pretty good shooter, if sometimes with a minor bit of work/smithing.

I was reading up on it, and it's parent company is Armscor out of the Phillipines. The article and reviews I've read said that it is made to the exact specs. of the original 1911. The only real difference is the capacity is 9 rounds. All user reviews have been excellent. The price for the stainless is about $500.00. I checked into other brands, and even a low end Taurus is about $650.00. Being a frugal individual living hand-to-mouth, (regardless of what Motorway says) I think I'll give it a try.

My Chief Deputy has one and former shift mate has one. They seem to like theirs. I'm sure they are not a race gun by any means but for the price... well I've spent worse money on a bad gym membership. The reviews I've read are mostly positive, but not all. The way the frame is made seems to be an issue with some. Metal injection? Anyway here is just one of the many reviews I found.

MIM or Metal Injection Molding. Remember you are holding a controlled explosion in your hand near your face. MIM can be used on small parts, but on a frame or slide? No way.

Remington R1's are going for $495 on Gunbroker. Your favorite gun shop should be able to get you going for $500 - American made!

Thanks for the advice about the Remington's and the Springfields. I'll definately be taking a look at them as well! That's why I came here!
