Perhaps this rather too honest advertisement should be used now. Rather than the warm and fluffy, touchy feely recruiting campaigns you now see.

But we were happier then. Just one set of clothes to wear for every occasion, no worries about being fashionable. (not that old Motorway has ever worried about that).
And 17 shillings a week. No razor blades or clothes to buy. Luxury.

Of all things to understand, I actually get the no regular shaving idea. Back when this was written, a shaving cut could go septic and kill you. Sucks that they've taken so many of your rights away from you since this was originally penned.

It's alright they aren't allowed to have the bullets anyway.
That requires a chief Constable, two assistant chief constables and a superintendent to authorise the release of ammunition from the safe back at the station.the sole advantage of power is that you can do more good.
