I need a nerd - stat!
Yeah, I know, they really don't say "stat" in hospitals that much, but I still like the ER version of reality better.
Now, to my question. Something odd happened last night, and I need someone smart to explain it to me. On the way to work, I drank most of a bottle of water (the kind you buy in a store). Yeah, yeah, I know - they're bad for the environment and all that, but I drink out of them constantly.
By the time I got to work, there was about an inch of water at the bottom of the water bottle. It was about 33 degrees out. I then go on to work a 10 hour shift, and left that bottle with the small amount of water sitting in a cup holder. The temp at work quickly falls to the mid 20s, and by the time I go home it's in the low teens.
On the way home, I stop by a gas station to fuel up, since I had let my POV get so low on fuel I didn't think I'd make it home. When I gas up, I usually do a quick trash check, and toss out everything that needs to find it's way to the local landfill. I see the bottle of water.
I was surprised to see that it wasn't frozen. I thought that was odd since it had been so cold for so long. I pick it up, and shake it a bit. Low and behold, it's still water. Cool - I decided to drink the last of the water, and toss the bottle (since I was still a bit thirsty from my run - we get a PT hour at the end of shift if we want and I jogged a little).
I turn the bottle upside down to kill the water real quick, and nothing gets to my mouth but a little bit of snow. The whole thing froze immediately when i turned it upside down. Not solid, but like the consistency of like a snow cone or a snowball. I looked at it like an idiot for a few seconds, saw - yeah, it's a snowball in there (which had been water a few seconds earlier), and threw it away. I wish now I would have taken a picture.
So, to all the nerds out there . . . . . what the hell happened. Why did it freeze from one end of the bottle to the next? Why did is stay water over the 10 hour shift, but froze when I tried to drink it? What gives power nerds? It was really kinda neato, and I'd like to know what is going on here. Was it maybe the temp inside the car was a bit higher, and when I took it out to toss it the water got exposed to the much colder air or what?
I'm waiting to be enlightened.Idiot

It must have crash cooled pretty quickly to turn from liquid water to ice in such a short space of time.
The bottle must have been protected in the cup holder of your car to keep the state of the water liquid and when you moved it the temperature droped below the triple point and caused the state to change to a solid."all that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing" Edmund Burke.
"the world is a dangerous place place to live; not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who do not do anything about it" Albert Einstein

ok, now that Big Dawg has been abducted...........
Some of the water condensed at the top half of the bottle and froze
the water on the bottom is a lager mass and did not have time to freeze.
Pick up bottle and give it a swirl, just water, right?
Tilt the bottle to drink and the frozen condensed water mixes with.
PRESTO CHANGO, slushy water.
I am not a nerd.
