Running code to jail

I was just wondering: It's always seen on movies that officers run code 3 when taking people to jail. Does anyone's dept actually do that? And if so, how can I get our policy changed to allow us to do that?

That would cut my trip to metro down a lot.

Only if there's a strange circumstance dictating it, but it has to be REAL strange. I wouldn't want to be trying to pay attention to the traffic I'm spooking, and the prisoner at the same time. That would be disaster in the making.

Captain Kirk doesn't follow it. Don't sterotype the actions of the one for the many.

Your extrerrestial example would not impress most street officers as a strange circumstance that has worked a full moon weekend.

Nope never have. Wouldn't have been allowed. At my old agency we would usually do 90 or so mph back and forth to the jail on the highway though. This was to cut time as much as we could. If an arrest was made it usually took the officer off the street for a minimum of 2 and a half hours or so from the time the arrest was made until he was back in the area after transporting to the jail. There was usually only one or two officers on so as quick a turn around as could be was needed.

Also it might have scared people away from committing crimes that might have caused them to get 90 mph rides!

Hell, the SO would run over 100 mph back and forth (on the roads it could be done on) to the jail from outlying areas. But I've seen them take 3 hours just to get to the jail

About the only way I could see it would be something where the prisoner either needs medical attention and the jail (with it's nurses & medic staff) are closer than a hospital, or where the prisoner has begun to act up in some way and I felt getting to the jail for the Brown Wave to help makes more sense than stopping and waiting for back-up. Impossible? No. Unlikely? Yeah.

For us, this would be special circumstances such as the prisioner has become a danger to themselves and the transporting officer, so much that the trip has to be expedited as much as possible. These situations also usually result in a welcoming committee waiting at the sallyport.

Outside of special circumstance, only in the movies. When I worked for a much larger department and we moved inmates to DOC/Angola it would be with buses and escort units all lights and sirens.

In 17yrs I can only recall doing this 2 times.

1) Was a female I arrested on 2 felony warrants who had 25+ cats and no litter box. The pants she picked up to wear she had to first shake the cat dung off of them before she put them on. To say that she stunk is an understatement. I went to the jail windows down and lights and siren on, then spent a long time dis-infecting my car after.

2) Was a severely combative male who was on drugs and was intoxicated. I worked for an agency that didn't put cages in vehicles, so its open to the prisoner. I drove lights and siren and had a cover officer following me, plus we had 5 or 6 detention Deputies waiting for us when we arrived to help adjust his attitude.
