O/R Wants to Know (vacation/sick time)
How does your department dole out time off? Personal days, sick time, vacation, etc.

We get 130 some odd hours of general leave at 5 years or less time in the agency. That is general leave and can be used for any reason...sick, personal, or planned vacation. On top of that, we have a holiday bank of 80 hours that can essentially be used in the same manner. During shift bid, we also have to bid for two one-week vacation blocks. That wipes out the holiday bank, and we are free to use our general leave as we see fit. One caveat is that we can't roll leave time over unless there are circumstances that dictate it, I.e. vacation requests repeatedly being denied (rare). We are also allowed to cash out 30 hours of leave at years end. Perfect for Christmas shopping, etc.

Ours is a pretty liberal policy considering how small our department is. We have a week (40 hours) of vacation time, holidays are the same as the bank/post office; we accrue 1 sick day a month and get our birthday off also.Job security...

4 hours vac and 5 hours sick per paycheck up until 5 years on, after that, i don't know what the rates are, Im not there yet.
That plus 88 hours holiday time added to the bank once a year.
We pick two- two week blocks of vacation during shift picks.
Sick and vacation are maxed out at a certain number of hours (again, not there yet so I don't know). The holiday hours are use it or lose it every year, as are the hours over the limit for the other two.The world would be much cleaner if blind people carried brooms instead of sticks.

Sick - 8 hrs per month and you can take up to 24 hrs without a doctors excuse. You can bank this up to 460 hrs (I think, can't remember but it's 400-some odd).
Vac - 80 hrs per year to the 10th year. Add 8 hrs per year over 10 years to 15 years for a total of 120 per year after 15 years of service. You can bank this time with no limits. I have built 997 hrs of vacation if I remember right. I use comp or holiday if I take off.
Holiday - 88 hrs per year accrued 8 hrs at a time, on the holiday. You can take them in pay or bank them for future use but you can't hold them over from year to year. They must be taken by Oct 1 each year.
It's really odd because all of our leave time is based on 8 hour shifts but we work 12s. When we went to 12s years ago, leave time did not change.*************************"It wouldn't take much for me to up and run...to another life somewhere in the sun."*************************"There's something inherently wrong with having to put on a bullet-proof vest and a gun to go to work."-(An old friend)

Our vacation and sick is all together in what is called PTO (Personal Time Off) it ranges from around 9hrs a pay period (2weeks) to the max that I get of 14.15 hrs every pay period. We also get 12 regular and 1 floating holiday a year which is another 130hrs for me. The holiday must be used during the year or you lose it, no exceptions. The PTO can bank up as you want, I currently have over 500hrs banked in case its needed for an unforseen emergency."An Unarmed man can only flee from evil, and evil is not overcome by fleeing from it." Right now I'm working as a contract programmer - It pays better than salary, but it sucks that I get no sick leave, no vacation, and not even free meal breaks.
Being off from work costs me several hundred dollars per day, and even going out to eat a cheap lunch winds up blowing 30 to 50 dollars depending on where I work.
Plus, I don't get paid between jobs, which can be just a few days, but last time was four months which meant I would have been better off answering phones overall. Friday was my last day at my current contract, and now I have a 2-week wait time with no pay until the background check for my next job comes back, plus my insurance goes to COBRA until my next insurance goes into effect. Yuck.

I get 216 hours of vacation, 72 hours holiday time, 36 hours personal holiday and 120 hours of sick leave. Sick leave that is unused accumulates from year to year and pays for health insurance after retirement with the state doubling 1500 hours of that. For the morning will come. 240 hrs leave. It is less for more junior officers.
If you go sick you can have up to 6 days without a doctors certification.
Technically you can do this an unlimited number of times, but don't try it, more than a couple of times will trigger the bosses to say you must have a doctor certify any sickness.
If you don't have any sickness you get an extra days leave, whoo hooo!the sole advantage of power is that you can do more good.
