Posting with your full name
One Forum I go to is starting a new policy on May 1st. Everyone MUST have their real name in the sig line.
It's a Firefighters forum and now about 50-60% of the users already do.
I do work professionaly with some of these people and they know my "Operator #" and voice on the radio but I'm leary of signing my name.
Opinoins?

Wow. Why on earth would they do that? What's the point?

There has to be a problem with people not being who they say they are.

Maybe. But I don't think I'd ever post my full name on the internet.

04-28-06, 02:23 AM #5It's a forum for firefighters. Everyone likes to think they do things the right way and other companies do it wrong.

I go to 2-3 Fire related forums and they can get pretty bad.
My favorite thread though was a couple weeks ago. One of the county dispatchers said he thought I had a "worse attitude than him!" I took it as a compliment
At least he posted his real name & county Operator number.

Who verifies that it's your real name? Hi I'm Georgie Porgie.
It's the internet, I can't imagine taking a whole lot of it seriously enough to get that bent out of shape over it.

It is your option to put your name if you want to. You can try it and see if it catches on. The mods are busy with checking on the LEO's to varify and keeping an eye on the forums it would be hard to check on everyone who walked through the door

I just meant if you frequented a site where others were posting their names.
I have to belive that the names are mostly real because most of them also post their staion and/or know each other in real life.

Snowball's chance in hell of me posting my name on the web.

Wasn't there a dustup a couple of months ago about someone wanting to pass a law to the effect that people must use their real names?

I don't mind telling my name to someone in a PM but no way I am posting my name on here. If that became the case, I am out of here.

Seems kinda silly to require it on your signature line.... How many people are willing to do that?

It was New Jersey, so don't act surprised.

That's a stupid policy that's bound to get someone fired.
I don't mind telling a buddy my real name in private (no big secret) but anyone in Public Service never can tell when some troll or pissed-off member or lurker will lodge a complaint against you for something you said, seems to me.Last edited by TXCharlie; 04-28-06 at 09:44 AM.

I have seen numerous cops post in forums under their real names. They were polite & professional. They never lasted long. There are too many kooks out there that beefed them to their IA or the kooks just simply posted all sorts of personal information on the officers including their home addresses. if the officers were lucky, that was all that was posted. Some were not so lucky. if you know where to look, there is a tremendous amount of personal information available on people. This is all public information.
