    Journalists: Friend or Foe?

How do you get along with the journalists in your area?

The last few decades have seen a really adversarial relationship with the media. The media, in many cases, will play up or manufacture controversy in order to stoke emotions and get ratings. Often at our expense. There also seems to be a huge lack of technical knowledge on the part of the media (nor any real interest in gaining any) when it comes to law enforcement.

Part of the problem is that we can't discuss the facts of the case during an investigation so the media is left with a black hole of information that they fill in however they can. Sometimes they are fair about it, usually they aren't.

At my previous agency I had an interesting experience with the local newspaper journalist who contacted me via the blog I started about work. This journalist had attended the "Citizen's Police Academy" that my agency runs. She was very supportive of law enforcement (even with left leaning political tendencies) and wanted to go on a ride along with me. Her "beat" was the police and fire departments of the region.

I had a great time on the ride along and the journalist became friends with me and my wife. She was indeed very supportive, and fair in her journalism. I often spoke to her and gave her back story or explained laws and training. She never quoted me but her stories became more accurate. I called her several times to break interesting stories and she was always appreciative. One of our officers made a very dramatic rescue of a suicidal woman and I called the journalist to tell her about it. The story was spectacular and the officer involved was on the front page of the newspaper and subsequently on TV and in the national media. The department would never had even sent a press release on that story but because of my relationship with the journalist, and her willingness to print positive stories, she requested the information and ran with it. It made our entire profession look good.

I realize though that in a lot of places, the media is no friend to us. What's it like in your area? Do you have personal interaction with journalists? Have they been good or bad experiences?

I have not yet had a good interaction with the media. I guess there is always tomorrow.

What you did is against our policy. If it was not I still do not trust the media. I have personally been involved in too many situations that they either were to lazy to report right/inflamed emotions or flat out purposely got wrong. I have some people in the media that I went to college with and we were in the same frat together. The condescending attitude toward law enforcement is evident from them. Ask Pudge, he was part of the Facebook beat down using facts that was given to one in particular.

At the patrol level I don't have any contact with the media. If they show up at scenes I send them to the sgt. Either way, all of our media iinfo is given out at morning press briefings, typically not at the scene.

We used to have a reporter who rode along with us somewhat frequently (every couple months) but I haven't seen her in awhile. She also rides along with the FD and ambo from time to time.

Like Five-0, I don't trust the media and I'll go out of my way to avoid them.

I trust a journalist just about as much as I trust a Democrat with my checkbook.

That is how we handled it in the military (in theory). I can't recall an incident where it was actually necessary.

When I was public safety director of the fire/ems dept in AK, the policy for the department was to refer inquiries to the chief, myself or the mayor in that order.

Lots of distrust with the media here. Why? Did you have a bad personal experience or near one?

Not personally no. That's because I learned early on. I have, however, known some of our local media, as well as others, to take a small amount of information and make an incorrect story from it. I have overheard phone interviews giving specific details and the wording in the article be different. When reading the article it seemed as if the information was printed different for the sake of drama. I stand, generally speaking, that media caters to ratings.

The story does not mean the truth because the truth usually does not sell as much ad space.

Sharks: they feed on whatever is in front of them. My definition of reporters. Journalists are a group of professional sharks who work for whores aka editors and media corporate level brass who decide what is true

The bigger the city the worse they get, because they are more isolated and less dependent on the people who work, live there, and who know what's going on. Customers for paid subscriptions and advertising i.e. ratings by more of the same types is the catalyst for their chemistry of "TRUTH". Arrogance is one behavior that stands out. They have a lot in common with fellow travelers called politicians hiding behind the DC beltway. "Journalists" haven't yet figured out the way to give themselves a pay raise by a simple vote.....

"Off the record" is as much of a guarantee of getting your money out of a guy who buys your old pickup from a Craigslist ad leaves you with your title cleared, left his personal check and forgot his ID at home. And he forgets to re-register the vehicle and gets in a wreck with no insurance.

The reporter is like a narc in generating a string of reliable sources, until the editor gets a go at the ethics of journalism, you get hung out to dry. There are laws to protect them and their sources, but the source person has only one path and that is called whistle-blower.

It's all about money, and if it's other peoples money or blood, the media could care less as long as it sells right next to the National Enquirer.
Some people come into our lives and quickly go. Some stay for awhile and leave footprints on our hearts. And we are never, ever the same.-- Anonymous

Old People, like me, may not be around to witness the destruction of our Nation. The rest of you may not survive the collapse. We all have the sworn duty to prevent it.

The light of hope burns brighter than the fires of doom.
