Whatsapp
Due to budget cuts my unit was forced to turn in our issued Blackberry's. We used the BB messenger function on a daily basis and were looking for an alternative. I came across Whatsapp and we trying it out. So far so good we were looking for a "cross platform" system due to the differences in cell phones owned by members.
WhatsApp Messenger is a cross-platform mobile messaging app which allows you to exchange messages without having to pay for SMS. WhatsApp Messenger is available for iPhone, BlackBerry, Android, Windows Phone and Nokia and yes, those phones can all message each other! Because WhatsApp Messenger uses the same internet data plan that you use for email and web browsing, there is no cost to message and stay in touch with your friends.
In addition to basic messaging WhatsApp users can create groups, send each other unlimited images, video and audio media messages.
Anyone else use it and if so how has your experience been?

I assume it requires everyone involved to install the app?

I use it. Yes, everyone has to install it, but it's a pretty good messenger program. It does text, pics, and vid with no glitches that I've come across so far. The app itself is pretty small, and it doesn't seem to hang.

I just downloaded it. Maybe it will be better than some of the others I use.

Eh, I just have unlimited texting so I don't need an app. And I can message any cell phone, not just people with that app. Heck, texting (and sending pics/etc. by text) is what I use on my phone far more than I call anyone. So for me it's just easier and worth it to have unlimited texting. I have the bare minimum minutes for voice, and actually wish I could DECREASE my minutes.

I've got unlimited messaging too, but not all my friends do. I use this for those friends.

I haven't used it, but use Google Talk for messaging across platforms.
I did recently ditch my Tikl push to talk app in favor of Voxer. Voxer not only does push to talk, but will do it in group conversations, texts and pics, all across platform. It's pretty handy."Like" us on facebook! https://www.facebook.com/pages/Offic...93147194083228

My texting capability went out the window with a network glitch today (Virgin Mobile) so I switched over to whatsapp. It may have saved my sanity.
