    Another ticket...another thank you letter

Well I had court yesterday. I had this woman I gave a speeding ticket to come up before the judge. I got her doing 48/25 but wrote her for the lowest speed I seen in RADAR which was 40/25. She comes up and tells the judge that the first thing she'd like to do is to thank me. When I hear that I'm ready to dive for cover and unholster but she hands me a small envelope with a thank you card in it. I have this blank look on my face and say "Uhhhhh OK" and grab it like it's a letter bomb or full of anthrax.

After court is over I open it and it's a thank you note for the speeding ticket. This is the second such thing I've gotten in the last month or so. I even scanned it to show you all that I'm not full of brown stinky stuff. LOL

Well she pretty much got that. The judge took her speeding ticket under advisement for 12 months. If she doesnt get another moving violation for 12 months then the ticket disappears.

I think I'll use this with my city council maybe they will lighten up on the subject? I had a nasty prined in the paper about me, that had my city in a uproar.
Just because your sign off after you're shift is done, doesn't mean that it's over and put blinders on. You're a cop 24/7 wether you like it or not. If thats something you can't handle, you should find a new line of work!

Darin, if you don't watch out, you will be "Rank" material sooner than later. I had verbal thank you's when ticket was handed to them, and then a complaint to the Chief's office would follow. Never trusted the nice and polite ones.

Ever notice the ones that are nice and thank us can afford the ticket? I mean, not all the time, because some of the biggest jerks I deal with are the rich ones.

You know when people say thank you after you give them a ticket?

    Two things come to mind:

    1) What are you thanking me for?? I probably just ruined your day

    2) Your welcome

I've always wanted to say the latter...

I always do, and tell them to have a nice day!

But what else should I say?

I don't know, it would be kind of like thanking your dentist. Sort of. You are just doing your job and I guess someone should thank you.

Unless you let them go with a warning...NEVER tell them to have a nice day. It sends a condescending tone. If they get a ticket then tell them they are free to go or to slow down and be careful. Sometimes I tell them to drive safe but never tell them to have a nice day.

This is funny. I always get complaints from people that I give warnings to. I never get complaints from people that get tickets for there actions.

Sometimes its real frustrating and you want find the source of the complaint to issue that contempt of cop ticket!!!!!

I use try and have a better day.

i had a couple of situations like that. had one lady put in a sticky note thank you with her payment to court. court emailed the thank you to the chief who forwarded it to me, woo hoo! also arrested a female for DUI. it was a give me (driving on the wrong side of the road). she blew over a .20 and still wrote a thank you lettet. still got that one pinned up
