Vacation time!

Hubby and I are planning our vacation. We generally tent camp, but this year we bought an old camper that needs some work but should be ready for use by this fall. That won't help too much for the big vacation this year, as it'll be in July, but it'll be nice for winter camping.

This year looks to take us to Mt Cheaha, Alabama. Staying at the campground, doing hiking around the state park, and traveling to other area state parks to take in the cave systems.

Anyone else just do the "get away from the general public" type vacations?

Yes, we also do one trip a year with another family up to Mille Lacs Kathio State Park near Onamia, MN. While it is not the end of civilization, sometimes it seems like you can see the end of civilization from the top of the fire tower! I missed the trip last year as I had just returned from 6 weeks of training in Georgia. I was tired and just wanted to recover. I am guessing I will make it this year. So you can call it a "get away from the general public" type vacation! Enjoy the camper. It sounds like fun.

I've never done a "get away from the general public" type vacation and I've never been camping.

The park looks beautiful, I'm sure that you guys will have an excellent vacation!

We've only been on one "get away from the general public" vacation, and I'm not sure it really counts. We stayed at a secluded cabin in Gatlinburg TN. It was very nice, no other cabins/neighbors in view. We did, however, spend a lot of time in town and in the National Park so it was not exactly devoid of "general public".

Your vacation sounds very nice!

I live in Colorado. I can drive 2 hours in any direction to get away from people. It's nice.

With all my family in Pennsylvania, all of my vacation time is spent either going to PA, or taking time off when they come to visit. That's why I'm glad i can take a day trip into the mountains to escape civilization.

Glad you'll have a vacation in a beautiful place! Another benefit is that if the zombies apocalypse happens while you are on vacation in a remote area, you will have fewer zombies around you! :eek:

Currently planning ours.

General idea is to take the bike ( my retirement present - a Ducati Multistrada 1200S Sport :biggrin1: ) through the Channel Tunnel, blast over to the Mosel Valley, then poodle down through the Black Forest into Switzerland and The Alps and from then on make it up as we go along for another week or so till we need to head home.

Not been able to do a bike holiday for 3 years due to injury so we're really looking forward to July!

I have been on "vacation" my whole life. Whilst in the Army, I worked and played in some of the more exotic places of the world. Can you imagine living in Paris France in the early 60's and getting paid for it. My wife and I manage to go to at least one place a year (outside of our state). Some of the more interesting places have been Russia, Egypt Morocco, Turkey, Croatia, Alaska. etc. Not to mention all of Europe and most of South America and a bit of Mexico and the Caribbean. We are planning a trip next year to China, Korea, Japan, Hong Kong VIETNAM, Singapore and Thailand. Make the most of your life and don't be afraid to leave your comfort zone and see the world while you can. You owe it to yourself and family. Our Brit friends have it made because they can hop the chunnel (sec) and be on the Continent in a matter of an hour or so. When you think about it, you can go from London to Rome in a matter of a day or so by car; try going from the East Coast to the Socialist occupied left coast in a day or to.

I just started my vacation I'm off till the 15 of June. I have a couple of things planned, but I'm gonna rest few days since NATO left town.

Mine starts Thursday. Missionary work. I'm going to Arizona to continue my mission to teach English to the natives. Only 3 weeks though, not enough time...............

Love this park. If your looking for some privacy though, go after the leaves change. Cheaha and Desoto (another really nice state park) both fill up when the colors change. Great park for the winter though. I have always stayed in the lower section, it's less crowded.

I love the get away from the public type trips. I've been talking my wife into overnight hiking for this reason. She's a hard sell though.

I don't know which section we'll be staying in, other than in the semi-primitive area. Tent camping does have some advantages. I definitely want one in a less crowded area. I only get one week vacation per year for now, and most of our winter months are on blackout due to the holidays. Plus Mr Ducky tends to be a bit of a wuss where cooler temps are concerned, hence the camper. With summer I can generally find some water to fling myself into, but warming his thin blood up in the wintertime is a tougher thing.

I'm a huge fan of state parks. I know it sounds odd, but the criminal element doesn't seem to be big into camping. :noidea:

Record temperatures in Phoenix! Hottest June day on record. Bit toasty for we sensitive types.

He speaks The Queen's English, just like an ex Army Officer should! He is being promoted at work, on the 4th July and says he is going to play our National Anthem over the tannoy and announce that the British are back in charge.

Went to the Grand Canyon today. That is one big hole in the ground. Train ride from Williams was good fun too.
