‘World’s first 3-D printable handgun’ under fire

The creator of what's being called the world's first 3-D-printed handgun is coming under fire from lawmakers concerned that anyone with a 3-D printer and an Internet connection will be able to print an untraceable arsenal.
Cody Wilson, the 25-year-old founder ofDefense Distributed, is expected to release his controversial blueprint for the gun—called the "Liberator"—online this week, according to Forbes.

Awesome! Government's gonna shit bricks it can't regulate this. Guess what? Firearms can be homemade too. Used to know a guy who homemade a. 50 caliber rifle. That was lots of fun to shoot.

I have serious doubts about how many rounds one of these guns could fire reliably. Also criminals can buy cheap/stolen guns on the black market, or manufacture a cheaper zip gun. There's no reason they would pay $8000 for a special printer that can make one of these.

Me thinks the ruling class is only concerned with the first round or two being reliable. As to homemade .50 cal this is very close:

Excellent points, stealing is about always cheaper than manufacturing (except Jackson Pollock art theft) This is a Hollywood assassin gun (wasn't John Malkovich the star of some thriller with a plastic gun formed from resin?) that is useless, in its current design, for anything but that sort of plot. I'm not a supporter for that reason, and also it's fugly.

I never was able to keep my inkjet from drying out between prints so I went down to Walgreens to print photos at ten cents each. Who needs a top of the line 3D printer in their basement if someone is willing to rent machine time?

And yet, the plans have already been taken down per a DoD request...

Streisand Effect in full force with the file being more popular than that sex tape of a French Hotel. I hope a week from now, if this is remembered at all, it'll be because a bunch of idiots went and ran the plans through cheaper printers, then put an eye out. Don't particularly like what the DoS did, but this overhyped zip gun has already had more than its 15 minutes. It's an embarrassment and brings undeserved suspicion upon an emerging technology.
