Chicago puts rookies on foot beats

Article: Rookie Chicago cops walk the beat

Flashlights in hand, the five rookie Chicago cops were walking along a darkened stretch of the gang-infested South Side neighborhood on a recent night when their radios crackled with a call of a battery in progress.
One behind the other, the five jogged the next block over, joining up with four other young officers already huddled around a man who said the two mothers of his children had just duked it out.

They've got support in cruisers, and they're not walking beats all by themselves...

What do you think? Good idea? Bad idea? Should it be limited to rookies?

If they are Academy trained and have support there is nothing wrong with an old fashion foot patrol. Doesn't have to just be rookies either. I'd walk one.

Shouldn't be limited to rookies, but I think it's a great idea. I love getting out and walking.

They're taking fresh guys with little training and experience and putting them on foot patrol in some of the worst areas of the city. They are doing it to new guys because they can't count on the union for 18 months, and are unable to bid to real patrol. I also don't think they get FTO either. The blind leading the blind without union protection in the worst areas. Sounds like a plan for winning.

I think foot patrols are good. But they need to be paired with FTOs first.

Why in a group of five?
Shouldn't they be with their training officer?
I started out as foot patrol as most officers did. Did my 10 weeks with a Tutor Constable (FTO) and was then out on foot on my own.
I loved foot patrol and it is a great way to learn your area and the people in it. For my last but one shift after my 30 years I went out on foot.
However it only really suits built up urban areas. Officers who went to rural beats got driving courses straight away as it was the only way to police those areas.

10 weeks? Soft Northern monkey. I got two weeks learning beats and then out on my own walking the streets of London.

    You were LUCKY,

    We lived for 3 months in a rolled up newspaper in a septic tank, we used to have to get up every morning at 6 o'clock and clean the newspaper. . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Right. I had to get up in the morning at ten o'clock at night, half an hour before I went to bed, eat a lump of cold poison, work twenty-nine hours a day down mill, and pay mill owner for permission to come to work, and when we got home, our Dad would kill us, and dance about on our graves singing "Hallelujah."

    From the article:
Fresh from the police academy and three months of street training, up to 16 rookie cops a night patrol some of the city's most dangerous blocks on foot as part of a new initiative that is a throwback to the department's days of old.
So they've done their FTO time.

I think foot patrol is good. I've seen way to many cops who seem to think they are required to be in their Mobile Observation Platform (with a nod to Buck Savage)
at all times. Get out of the car, learn the community. Watch some kids play baseball. Simply chat with folks. It's amazing what you learn -- and how much they'll help you later.

But I question it being limited to the rooks. Why not spread it around?

I also support foot patrols and did them a lot. I still question the wisdom of recruits just off FTO on foot patrol in the worst neighborhoods Chicago has to offer. Cutting your teeth after FTO on foot patrol in the downtown area with drunks and lost tourists sounds like a much better idea.

The reason they are doing it to the rooks is because they don't have union protection and can't grieve a forced transfer.

The Chicago cops seem to think there is no FTO happening for these recruits. Straight from the Academy to foot patrol in the ghetto. Read the comments, most think this is suicide patrol. There have already been assaults on them and a shooting and this hasn't been happening for long.
