Article about your arrest not accurate

So you work a case, make an arrest, complete the paperwork, turn it all in, and go home. The next day rolls around and you read about your case in the paper or you see a local news station reporting on it, and your first reaction is "what the f--- is this?" The information is totally inaccurate. Whether it was the fault of the police department for releasing bad information (probably because the person doing the media release didn't take the time to read the report) or the media screws up the information. The story ends up with the wrong names, wrong location, wrong charges, etc. Sad thing is, many people consider news reports as gospel even thought they are prone to inaccuracies.

Anyone have any good media story f---ups?

That's just the way the media is. They don't care about accuracy or truth, they only care about selling advertising.

Try to ignore any of your stuff that's in the news. It will just frustrate you.

I was involved in a shooting incident where we ambushed an armed robbery team. Lots of shots fired in both directions resulted in 2 dead and 1 wounded robbers. 1 wounded cop. However only one long arm was used by us (mine). Someone took a picture from above us, immediately after the incident which the press published. But they doctored the photo to show all of us with long weapons! Bastards the lot of them.

The press don't give a damn about truth. That's evident in everything they do now.

Ratings, drama, scooping the rivals and money. Truth may be addressed somewhere in the fine print if at all.

Don't forget, if anything bad can be even remotely attached to a cop's name, they'll do it. And if / when the officer is found completely free of any wrongdoing, there will be no follow-up article. Any retraction (unlikely) will be a half paragraph, buried near an editorial piece about the local high school sports rivalry.

Too many people read about sports. They'll put it next to the job training for welfare recipients ad.

Hey, Ducky - If you read The State newspaper, the High school Sports rivalry WILL be on the front page, the officer info, etc will be hid amoung the obit columns.

People read the obits, too. I think Xiphos nailed it with it being in the Classifieds section for "Getting off the government tit"

There was a double shooting recently and the victims ages were off in the article. It wasn't a detailed article but a paragraph during a day of multiple shootings.

I remember going through college, and listening to criminal justice professors (you know they people who teach classes about the police but were never cops) using news articles as if they were gospel. "Oh but the article says xyz so that must be what happened."
