3 officers, 1 trooper wounded in Texas

MIDLOTHIAN, Texas - Three police officers and a state trooper were shot and wounded Sunday during a standoff at an apartment complex that stemmed from a report of a broken window, officials said.
The gunman had not surrendered Sunday evening. Gunfire broke out again shortly before 8 p.m. and several officers wearing gas masks could be seen moving into the building where the gunman was holed up.
Officers were initially called to the apartment complex because of a report of a broken window in this town about 25 miles southwest of Dallas, Midlothian police said.
The officers determined the window had been broken by a gunshot and went to the apartment where they believed the shots had been fired. There, police said the gunman opened fire.
Trooper Rick Smith was shot as he responded to the report of three officers being wounded, said Lisa Block, a Texas Department of Public Safety spokeswoman.
Kim Gladney, 25, who lives in the complex, said she heard 10 shots ring out.
"After the first five, I knew something was wrong," she said as she stood just beyond the police barricades. "It just didn't sound good."
Midlothian police Sgt. Brian Woolery was in serious condition at Methodist Dallas Medical Center Hospital, spokeswoman Kathleen Beathard said. Officer Dustin Compton was in good condition and Smith was in fair condition. The fourth officer, Cody McKinney, was in fair condition.\\` ` ` ` < ` )___/\

We dallied under
Vine maples and sapling alders

But instead
Found blackberry riots and
Desiccated branches
An old skid road
Brought ghost ferns and
Hollows filled with
Skunk cabbage
While waves wrapped
Intricate lacings of weeds

Were hard enough to make

Tender enough to attract me

WTH is up with Texans shooting at the Po-Po?
This incident just goes to show that the "broken windows" theory has a few teeth to it. Sometimes when you go to fix the smaller problem, you end up fixing a bigger one.
You think?"After the first five, I knew something was wrong," she said as she stood just beyond the police barricades. "It just didn't sound good."

MIDLOTHIAN, Texas - Three police officers and a state trooper were shot and wounded Sunday afternoon and the alleged gunman died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, ending a standoff that lasted more than eight hours, police said.
Police said the siege began when officers were called to an apartment complex because of a report of a broken window. They determined it was shot out, and when they went to the apartment where the gunfire appeared to have come from, someone opened fire on them.
Trooper Rick Smith was shot as he responded to the report of three officers being wounded, said Lisa Block, a Texas Department of Public Safety spokeswoman.
Midlothian police spokesman Britt Snipes identified the dead gunman as Richard Wayne Miles, 25, of Midlothian, about 25 miles southwest of Dallas. Officers don't know the motive for the shootings, Block said.
Hundreds of people gathered around the two-story brick building, which was illuminated after nightfall by high powered lights, and bursts of gunfire punctuated the air throughout the evening.
Midlothian police Sgt. Brian Woolery was in serious condition at Methodist Dallas Medical Center Hospital, spokeswoman Kathleen Beathard said. Officer Dustin Compton was in good condition and Smith and Officer Cody McKinney were in fair condition.
A woman who has lived across the street from Miles' parents for the past 12 years said he had been having trouble keeping a job.
"This surely is a shock," said Teresa Colvin, whose children grew up playing with Miles. "I knew he's been having some problems, but I didn't think it would go this far."\\` ` ` ` < ` )___/\
