    Texas Roadhouse

This was posted on another forum, and the poster gave me permission to post here.

While I do not think this is a reflection on the corporation - it is surely a reflection on the franchisee - and another stunning example of how lame people can be when they try to get out of paying a fine.

I wanted to pass some information on to you concerning Texas Roadhouse as I know some of you eat there from time to time.

In mid-June the False Alarm Reduction Unit received a letter from our local Texas Roadhouse (just down from the station) appealing a number of false alarm fines. The restaurant apparently had a number of wiring issues and issues with the alarm company and had tripped numerous false alarms. All of these problems and accumulated fines occurred prior to May 8th.

In asking for the a waiver of the fines the letter pointed out that the restaurant had lost over $5000 in sales the night of our shooting and $4000 in sales during each funeral procession in the two weeks that followed. Although it's beside the point, I find this very hard to believe. As you all know the intersection was closed for about an hour during each funeral procession, in the middle of the afternoon, not the lunch or dinner rush. The letter went on to say that the restaurant had taken some food to the command post at the hotel and that they give our officers a discount when they eat in the restaurant (most I've asked said they paid full price). The letter wanted us to know the "major financial impact" our event had on their store, asking us to re-examine the false alarm fines.

Obviously I told the False Alarm Unit to instruct the restaurant to pay their fines. This letter really upset me for a number of reasons, least of all it was in extremely poor taste. Several days later I contacted the corporate office for Texas Roadhouse in Kentucky and relayed my concern. I emphasized that while other local businesses were holding fund raisers for our fallen officers their restaurant was looking to use the incident as an excuse not to pay their fines. Although each store is individually owned, the corporate office appeared very concerned and asked that I fax them a copy of the letter, which I did, and said that someone would be in touch with me soon. About a week later I got a phone message from the Managing Partner for the state of VA, who said he was going out of town for three days but would contact me when he returned. After not hearing anything for over three weeks, I contacted the corporate office again. They had the Managing Partner for VA call me again who apologized on the local restaurant's behalf, stating the owner should never have sent the letter, etc. To this day, I have never heard from the owner of the local store that wrote the letter, although the Managing Partner from VA claims to have spoken to him about the letter and relayed his apologies.

The reason I am passing this on to all of you is to just make you aware of the situation. While we all have to make our own choices, I personally will never give the restaurant my business, or my family's business, again.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

I believe you checked it for verification, but that's unbelievable! What a shit bag. Maybe when there is a "problem" at that place of business, the police car now has a flat tire and can't make it there as quickly.

I actually love eating at the Roadhouse, (too bad there's not any up here) however, if I were in that neck of the woods I would never eat at that particular one ever. It's hard to condemn the entire franchise over the action of one obvious asshole. I think if I was that Cpt. I would still be on Corporates ass until I recieved some type of substantial apology. Every officers in that area should let everyone they know about this, and let the local owner see what real financial loss looks like.

I would even have looked at releasing the letter to the local media to show what kind of support the retuarant gives to Law Enforcement and the officers that died in the line of duty. Now we would see about a substantial loss of business, but it would be buttholes own fault!!

the bottom line is they are more concerned with their bottom line then anything. that is about the most disrespectfull thing i have ever heard, not just because it a police officer that had fallen but if they sent that letter to anyone about the same problem. plenty of other resturants just like it with the same kind of food. man thats shitty

What bugs me too, is that all the guy had to do was make himself first contact on alarms. He knew there was a wiring problem, he could have requested no response until he checked.

We get a lot of false alarms, and we charge after a certain number is reached each month. I've also had a couple that turned out valid, so even when a location has had multiple false alarms, the response is always as if it was valid.

If I was that Captain, I'd send that letter certified mail to the President of Texas Roadhouse at their corporate headquarters.

There may be repercussions for that franchisee, because there's probably wording in their contract against damaging the reputation of the corporation.

Upon further research....it would appear that all restaurants are corporate owned.

Sounds like the GM for the Chantilly restaurant needs a little re-training.

Wow- a whole team to just answer alarm calls? I wish we had that kind of manpower.

What do you consider a "team?"

We serve 9 contract cities, and they decide how many officers staff their city. An alarm is usually a 2 unit response, silent hold-ups maybe 1 or 2 more, but if it's false it clears pretty quick.

The nice thing about CAD, is we dispatchers can check the premiss history and see if there are any documented problems.

I've worked the radio on a couple valid bank hold-ups, and a few armed
hold-ups at liquor/conveniance stores, I never take them for granted.

I'm right down the street from this particular Texas Roadhouse. Maybe I'll have to stop by one day and ask the manager his position on this. Might be fun to watch his backpedalling.

I work the county joining this county. They don't have teams that responds to alarms. Patrol officers and K9 handle this. This false alarm unit handles the paperwork regarding these alarms. Companies and home owners are fined when we receive false alarms and someone has to take care of the paperwork involved.

I thought he was thinking we sent something like a SWAT unit!

I don't know what part of Cali you are in, but we do have a Texas Roadhouse in Elk Grove.

I've never been there, but I sure hope they are more pro-LE than the one in the article!

Didn't know that one was there. I'm further north and east, think Hwy 49 north of Auburn (about 23 miles north). I know there is one north of San Jose, but can't remember which town. When I lived in OK, I saw alot of cops eating there, I never went there on duty, but have never had a bad experience.

I do think there needs to be a formal apology from the corporate office though.

Agreed. I won't go to the one in Elk Grove until I hear that an apology has been issued.

    Update!

    ***reposted with permission***

I wanted to update everyone on what has happened with Texas Roadhouse since my last email to you all on the subject.

Apparently my email made the rounds, to include reaching people outside the department. In fact the email was copied and put on Officer.com. This generated emails from officers and retired officers from around the country, as well as emails to to the Texas Roadhouse corporate headquarters in KY. Last Wed. Mr. Hart, CEO and President of Texas Roadhouse, called me to discuss the matter. Mr. Hart was very concerned and upset about the letter. He stressed that the letter in no way represented the views of Texas Roadhouse, adding that his father had been a police officer for 25 years and that he is very pro law enforcement. He came across as being very sincere and assured me that he was going to call the man that wrote the letter, Mr. Rainwater, and address the issue with him. During the conversation he stated that he didn't care if the intersection had been closed all day and thousands and thousands of dollars lost, it was not important compared to the tragedy we were dealing with.

About 30 min after my conversation with Mr. Hart, Mr. Rainwater called me and set up a meeting for this past Friday.

On Friday a letter arrived from Mr. Hart, again saying how sorry he was over the entire incident and how important he thought local law enforcement was to community. The letter also included a nice donation to the trust funds set up for Mike and Vicky's families.

Mr. Rainwater came in on Friday, with his regional boss, and we met for about 15-20 minutes. He appeared very sincere, said he didn't know what he was thinking when he wrote the letter, and was very sorry. Obviously I'm paraphrasing but I think the point is we all make mistakes (and granted he made a big one) and he realizes he made a huge error in judgment. Mr. Rainwater understands that we may not want to partner with his restaurant anytime soon and may not wish to eat there, but assured me that he was going to try and make this up to us and the community.

I also receive a follow-up letter from Mr. Rainwater this week again expressing his apologies and deep regret over the incident.

I think Texas Roadhouse has taken a very bad situation and delt with it the best way they could. I am satisfied with their actions and think it is time for us to move on and put this to rest. As this issue has become so wide spread, and emails have been sent to numerous people across the country, I want to point out that our issue was with an individual, who had a huge lapse in judgment, from a specific restaurant. I don't believe our issue is with Texas Roadhouse as a corporation and am certainly not endorsing any type of action against that chain of restaurants. They took a bad situation and handled it the best way they could for which I am appreciative. I don't want to see other locations suffer due to the actions of an individual.

If anyone has any questions, please let me know.
