I love big dogs too! My Mom raises Cavaliers though, and I have a friend that shows Salukis and Scottish Deer hounds.

We are due to get an American Mastiff puppy in the spring. We are on this years puppy list. My husband and I both fell in love with Mastiffs however my husband the clean freak could not deal with all the drool. I did some research and found American Mastiffs (a relatively new breed) has a dry mouth. Bingo! Sign us up.
Should make things a little more interesting around the house I should think.
I had a professor in college that only had Great Danes from the time he was 9. They were such beautiful and friendly dogs. He would bring one to class from time to time.
Enjoy your gentle giants!!!

My wife and I are looking into a dog to go with the new house soon. It has come down to Danes or Boxers. Love both of them, but I think the Boxers are going to win out. Still love the Danes though especially the Brindles and Fawns.

I want a Great Dane, but no one around here sells 'em. But I am looking.
And Shepards we shall be,
for thee, My Lord, for thee,
Power hath descended forth from Thy hand,
That our feet may swiftly carry out Thy Command.
So we shall flow a river forth to Thee
And teeming with souls will it ever be.
In Nomine Patris, Et Filli, Et Spiritus Sancti.

I had a Great Dane for 4 years. You have to be able to put up with a lot of slobber. My ex and I got her from a friend who couldn't keep him. His name was Harley and he was a Harlequin. My ex's friend paid to fly him to us. When I picked him up and saw how big he was, I was shocked. At the time, I worked nights and when I cam home my ex would have to get up and bring Harley to me otherwise he wouldn't let me in the bedroom.
I found I had to introduce people to him and then he was OK. He was a great lover and a ladie's man. He would come up to you sideways and back you into a corner so you had to pet him. When I got divorced I got custody of Harley. He'd start out sleeping on the floor and during the night end up in bed with me. I'd have about 8 inches of sleeping room and he took the rest of the queen sized bed. Danes are very touchy-feely. He would constantly push against me to feel me next to him.
I lost him in 2002 to kidney problems. Deep chested dogs like Danes are also prone to stomach twisting so be careful about exercising before or after feeding.

I have a Great Dane puppy. 3months old and he is the size of a medium black lab. Going to be a monster. My family raised St. Bernards when I was a pup, then went to Akitas.
I also have:
Pug (8 lbs.)
Bassett Hound (85 lbs)
P.S.- Cona- PM me and I can get you in touch with a local breeder of Danes. She has a bitch that is going to have pups anyday nowAny day above ground is a fine day indeed!

We dallied under
Vine maples and sapling alders
Searched for lady slippers
But instead
Found blackberry riots and
Desiccated branches
An old skid road
Brought ghost ferns and
Hollows filled with
Skunk cabbage
While waves wrapped
Intricate lacings of weeds
'Round mule spinners
His cyanotic eyes
Were hard enough to make
The sun turn tail and
Tender enough to attract me
To his world of illusion
