Who Is Your Mentor?
We have all had people we have worked with (LEO and non-LEO) that we looked up to as kind of a hero. Maybe some old gruff sheriff or just an FTO a few years older. Who was it for you and why?
Mine was an old Sgt. who trained me. He was old-school and hard-core. My first day of training with him he asked for my weapon. I unload it, double-check it and hand it to him butt first. He says, "Well, that's a clean weapon but you need to file down the front site." I say Why? He says, "So when the bad guy takes it away from you and SHOVES IT UP YOUR ASS, it won't hurt so bad!" I loved that guy. RIP, Sgt. Ron................

My mentor was an old deputy sheriff named Robert F. (Goose) Tatem. He was a Intermediate PR-24 instructor among other things. Got cashiered over political BS and opened a security company where I met him.
For my 24th birthday he gave me his entire library of police training tapes (about 30 hours worth). He saved my ass with his teachings more times that i care to count. His only request: pass it on.
He's why I became an instructor. May he rest in peace.
Damn I miss that old man..."My motivation is slipping, people bug me, and I'm tired of wasting my time on drivel."

I look up to a few people who have really been kind to me.
One is a detective and the other two are higher up at headquarters now.http://www.allpoetry.com/Grunts%20Girl
We dallied under
Vine maples and sapling alders
Searched for lady slippers
But instead
Found blackberry riots and
Desiccated branches
An old skid road
Brought ghost ferns and
Hollows filled with
Skunk cabbage
While waves wrapped
Intricate lacings of weeds
'Round mule spinners
His cyanotic eyes
Were hard enough to make
The sun turn tail and
Tender enough to attract me
To his world of illusion
