Question
Why does my dog feel that it is necessary to take a shit in the yard and then proceed to roll around in it?

Because the dog belongs to a Fed
Being the best is not what always counts. What counts is always trying your best.
Remember who you are, and where you came from. That way you never get a big head.

Maybe they have an identity crisis going, and it is confused and thinks it is a pig.
Seriously, it is probably wanting attention, negative or positive. Since I am pretty sure you are giving it a bath afterward, that is percieved as quality time. You are reinforcing this behavior. Dog shits in yard, rolls around and then you give it a bath and attention. That is a novice explanation, of animal psychology, but it does follow Pavlovian Theory. Sometimes it is harder to figure out why animals do crazy things, where as a human can attempt to explain behaviors.

Maybe he just likes it because it's warm.

Because you don't live next to a lake, where there would be lots of dead fish to roll in - you inconsiderate bastard!

Well, I've had dogs that would find dead things to roll in, I just thought they liked the scent. So maybe yours thinks his really does smell of roses?

I did think of that. But its not like I can afford NOT to wash the smelly fucker. It had to be dealt with...
... so I told my wife to do it! She washed the stink off of him (and almost puked a few times in the process).
God I love that woman. She takes good care of me and my dog.

To add to the attention thing, you might be right, I haven't took him out for a run in a while since we were on vacation. We will be going out for a nice jog here in a little bit.

A quick scan of the net gets me this....
Don’t dogs do some of the strangest things? Rolling in feces, though, is really very common. Possibly a dog’s ancient instinct to mask his scent, which would then enable the animal to sneak up on their prey without detection. Even if your dog does not hunt, she may not like the way that she smells—especially if you’ve just given her a bath! Or she just likes the smell of the feces.dlefdal said:
