My camping story
So I went camping at Lake Mead. Just me and my two chihuahuas. I went fishing all night and camped out. Well I knock out . I awaken to " Hey wake up
!" Its a a national park service ranger. My dogs are going nuts barking at him. I get out and he tells me what im doing out there. He looks in my tent and sees my glock. He unholsters tells me to turn around, Calls for back up. I announced I was a Police officer , I was still put in cuffs. It was funny cause my dogs were nipping at his ankles when he cuffed me. LOL. Protection! So he sat me down , I calmed my dogs down. He searches my tent and finds my other two mags. I told him to go to my car and grab my badge and ID. He does. Still keeps me in cuffs. ( back up at the lake takes forever ) . So im talking to him while sitting down and waiting for his sgt. to come. He informs me he is there because a guy on the other side of me got assaulted and a stick literally shoved in his ass. he says Im in possesion of having a firearm on federal land....Im trying to inform him I can carry it here!! So this guy pissed me off. Finally is sgt came and cleared me and got me outta cuffs. I made his sgt laugh cause I stated " ok, So your telling me i cant carry a gun to the lake but you just told me the guy next to me got a stick in his ass, I think id break the rule for that one! "
I had to clarify for them that I could carry a weapon anywhere !!! they finally got the hint
Also Last night I get a call to assist other jurisdiction....Guess who I have to assist!!!!!

Tony, the Ranger might be right. You might not be allowed to carry on Federal Land any more than you can carry in a Federal Courthouse. LEOs here cannot carry into the Federal Courthouse.

I can carry at the lake. Hence why the SGT took me out of cuffs quickly

It was just great to back him up and have him just look at me and say sorry dood. LOL.

I have carried into the fed courthouse several times. Once without my ID. HR 218 seems to have gotten police on the same page. Obviously, I am not going to fuss if they tell me to secure it, but I have not had the problem so far. To clarify, Tony, HR 218 does read that the law does not supercede the laws concerning parks, bases, government buildings, private institutions. The only place I have had them get hinky about it is military bases, other than that, I have not had a problem anywhere I have been.

Badges, credentials and weapons can be lost and stolen....
Several Park Rangers have been murdered in the line of duty, they have good reason to treat the situation following all the rules of officer safety that you follow on patrol.
Maybe next time you should check in with the Ranger and introduce yourself in advance, that way they know you're there.
*edit*
You might want to give your Sergeant a heads up too, just the straight up story though, no commentary on the Rangers ability to do his job.

I agree with initially placing you in cuffs, Officer safety. Once he determined that you were a cop, I personally would have taken the cuffs off but kept the gun till thenSGT. arrived to clear the legality issue. My .02 worth

Me too.
But, as 121 said, keep the credentials WITH the gun, always. On your body, or in a bag together, whatever. But, definetly keep them together.

You know, Tony, if you were rectally violated with a stick, there is no shame on your part. Acknowledge it, admit it and learn to live with it.(Maybe he thought you were a Pinata!)
