Geico Cavemen Will Be Focus of New ABC Sitcom

Those Geico "cavemen" shouldn't be so upset after all — they may get their own television series.

ABC said Friday it had ordered a pilot for a comedy, tentatively titled "Cavemen," that features the characters used in a series of ads by the insurance company.

In the ads, cavemen appear insulted by a Geico pitchman's claim that the company's Web site is so easy to use that "even a caveman can do it."

The potential series, one of 14 pilots that will be produced by Touchstone Television this spring, features the cavemen as they "struggle with prejudice on a daily basis as they strive to live the lives of normal thirty-somethings in 2007 Atlanta."

It's unusual for characters from an advertising campaign to move into shows of their own, but not unprecedented. The CBS comedy "Baby Bob" featured a talking baby that had been used in several advertisements, according to Daily Variety.

The advertising copywriter who helped create the "cavemen" ads is writing the pilot, the studio said.

A pilot order is no guarantee a show will make it on the air; in fact, the majority of pilots don't make it that far.

It might actually be funny if the cavemen were portrayed as being dumb as shit, which actual cavemen would be.

I'll have to re-check my DVR programming to make sure it doesn't accidentally record that show.

It sounds like a good idea to me. I'll watch it as long as it doesn't become some preachy show about how we have to treat minorities as something special.

From the description of the show, I think that's gonna be the whole point of the show.

I'd like to see a network with enough balls to portray a trio of black chicks as being as stupid as Paris Hilton, Nicole Richey & Anna Nicole, if they could even FIND any black chicks that stupid. So far I haven't met any

Well, I guess Nicole Richy is half black, but she's also the only one I'd trust to walk and chew gum at the same time.

Ok, I guess Nicole doesn't invalidate my point that they can't find any black chicks as dumb as Anna, Paris & Nicole, after all

Seriously, my real point was if they made minorities appear that dumb, there'd be cries of racism all over the place, just like for the Amos & Andy TV show - Which was a great show. They actually had only one dumb guy on the show that I can remember.

I dont understand why if something is funny for just a 15-30 second commercial how it can sustain funny for 30 min... without using the same stuff...
seems like a one joke show..

That's what I was thinking, too. I do love the commercials, I think that they're very clever and funny - in 30 second blocks.

I never thought they were funny at all... Now if the caveman took a dump on the airport people mover, or walk into the womens' restroom and start drinking out of the toilet, THAT would be funny

Do you see a pattern here to what I think a caveman could do to get laughs?
