I have a bad back, which makes it hard for me to do sit-ups in any significant number. Does anyone have any suggestions on ab workouts that don't hurt your back? I'm trying to flatten my stomach. I'm getting chubby and it's driving me nuts.

Can you just do crunches? Your abs are short muscles, and you really don't need that huge a movement to work them. You might also look for "core strength" exercises, and consider doing stuff on the Swiss ball.
If you work on your abs -- your back problems may improve, too.
Hell why have a six pack when you can have a pony keg.
Plank exercises. Last time I had problems with my back, the doc gave me a list of exercises to try out to strengthen my core muscles. This worked real well and didn't bother my back. YMMV

This will sound crazy, but I got my back stronger and improved my sit ups doing hyper extensions. I've moved on to weighted hyper extensions now.

Core training is where its at... Google or YouTube TRX suspension training, everything you need can be done on the one bit of kit. I swear by it and use it 3 or 4 times per week. Correct diet is 50% of the work also..enjoy your lettuce! :D

Hyper extensions and Plank excercises work really well.

I got introduced to those suckers by our demonic academy instructor (who I swear has black and decker somewhere on his body)... and WOW - those things work you out...
Thanks for all the tips, guys. I'll try some of them.

There are a few really good exercises there, but the key is getting your core muscles stronger. Perhaps not surprisingly, when you get the abs stronger, your back will hurt less. :)
