Back in the 1980's when I had my psuedo-gubbermit contractor gig, we got along fine without all them new-fangled gadgets, and we didn't even have to pee in a cup till about 1988.

It's pretty funny really... I had a security clearance in the service without a polygraph, but had to tell a guy my worst secrets to wear a badge and gun.

Not all gubmint jobs look for the same issues.

This was the first job I have ever taken a poly and pisser for. All the brass at my old, hometown PD knew all my family. I would bet the BG investigation wasn't too intense (even though there was nothing there to hide).

Yeah, most clearance levels don't even require a poly, and the ones that do even have different levels of digging into your past. I've passed the most strict levels I know of for the government, and the local police poly I took years ago was still the most intense and stressful.

I got the TS treatment, with a special investigation for a foreign born wife.

Ha! Man, those guys make some serious money. Apparently a lot are contractors, and they get paid mileage and hourly. I wondered why they were always so anxious to drive to meet me places when I could tell them the info over the phone.
