Hello from CO!

Hello everyone!! I imagine I'm one of the youngest people here...(just a guess, lol). I'm a 19 year old, short, blonde, non-intimidating female who has wanted to work in homicide as far back as I can remember. I haven't gotten much support in my career choice, because most people say I'm not the "type". But...I'll prove them wrong, haha.
Right now I'm working on my associates degree in criminal justice, with a focus in patrol. I'll graduate in May 2013, then I'll be applying to the Police Academy, and hopefully working here in the city I grew up in. I'm hoping after a few years as a patrol officer, I can work my way up to Detective, and work in the homicide unit.
I have two very important people in my life who are my biggest support right now. My son, who just turned one, and my boyfriend, who supports me wanting to be a police officer all the way. Without those two I couldn't do it :)
Well, ANYWAY, I think that's a pretty swell introduction. I'm really excited to be a part of these forums, and hope that I can learn a lot from all of you! :)

Sounds like have workable goals, and have some great support to help accomplish those goals.

To kinda double up on this and your other post, I have known and worked with some excellent female officers (deputies in my case), and I've also worked with some that should have never gotten into Law Enforcement.

Some I wouldn't hesitate to walk through the gates of hell with (and have done so), but also some that I wouldn't trust to go get me change for a quarter and bring it back to me.

Welcome from Ohio! Sounds like you have some goals outlined. Whatever you do, don't think of it as a setback if it doesn't go as planned. This is one of the strangest careers for throwing curveballs and putting you into something you'd never dream that you would enjoy. Stay flexible, and keep working.

People who still think there is a "type" are throwbacks. You have to be willing and able to fight, but police work is more about what's between your ears than physical appearances. There's a lot of guys here half my size who I'd rather have for cover than the brutes, and some of the best cops I've ever known have been women.
