Hello!
Welcome to LEF!
A Smile
A smile cost nothing, but gives so much.
It enriches those who receive it,without making poorer those who give.It takes but a moment, but the memoryof it sometimes lasts forever.
None is so rich or mighty that hecan get along without it,and none is so poor but thathe can be made rich by it.
A smile creates happiness in the home, fosters goodwill in business, and is the countersign of friendship.
It brings rest to the weary, cheer to the discouraged, sunshine to the sad,and it is nature's best antidote for trouble.
Yet it cannot be bought, begged, borrowed,or stolen, for it is something that is of novalue to anyone until it is given away.
Some people are too tired to give you a smile.Give them one of yours, as none needs a smileso much as he who has no more to give.

I came to Vancouver, Canada while in the US Navy and found it to be a very clean and neat town with lots of beautiful women.
Do the officers in Vancouver treat other officers from the US like one of there own ? Or, do they treat US officers differently ? I am aware of the NO GUN rule in Canada, NEVER carry!!
Some of the best advice I can offer (retired after 35 yrs large Metro area) is to SHUT UP and LISTEN to other experienced officers and WATCH and LEARN. Ask questions but DON'T overdue that either.
Remember that EVERY human being has a their own SPACE!! You don't allow anyone into YOUR SPACE and you don't get into THEIR SPACE OR FACE !! The biggest thing is that you show them RESPECT and also mandate that in turn they show you RESPECT!! You can also remind them that you respected them and they should respect you in return.
As stated before, develop thick skin BUT remember find a listening post after work, NOT in BOOZE or DRUGS!! Meet after work or better talk at home about ANYTHING that bothers you or what you saw. The best way to eat a barrell is to store all the stress inside you and not letting it out!! I have seen TOO MANY officers lose it....
There is too many things running through my mind to talk on here but I strongly suggest that you find a good veteran officer who you get along with and trust and maybe have a few drinks or socialize with and use him for a sounding post or good advice....
Take care and Be safe all !!

Thanks for the advice, big-mo. From what I've seen and heard, we welcome our brothers and sisters from the US of A with open arms. Apparently, after 9/11 the Police Mutual Benevolent Association out of Vancouver arranged a limosine pickup for the New York officers that were coming here and there was a full police escort for them. I do believe that we do get visiting officers from all over the world, including the US who come out for ride-alongs with us.
Conalabu, I tell you those dogs can be damned finicky sometimes. Getting to a call can be a b*tch.

Hopefully I can get a ride-along in the Big Apple as well. Always wanted to check the place out. What better way to do it than from a police car?
