Retired Female Cop from OMAHA, Nebraska
Hi , I was directed to this site, through an article in our OPD Union paper "The Shield" http://www.omahapoliceunion.com
It was a highly recommended website, for both civilians and Sworn LE personnel.
I am a retired, female officer, who worked mostly patrol, in my 15 years on the job, before I was forced to retire due to an incompetent physician and my own stupidity in not going to another doctor and getting a second or third opinion. If there is anything I would ever tell anyone facing a chronic illness is this: Get a second and third opinion by doctors who don't know that you are doing just that and who don't know your first doctor. They will just mimic what he or she has said, most likely if they know your primary's diagnosis.
Unfortunately, my condition was getting to the point where it was endangering not only my life, but anyone I might be working with. So, reluctantly, I retired. Since that time, I have found a doctor who has helped me quite a bit. The medical condition that lost caused me the loss of my career, is the fairly recently validated, illness called "Fibromyalgia."
Because this illness strikes mostly women, for many years, women were told it was "all in our heads." Now, many in the medical community, know that Fibromyalgia is a real condition and I can tell you that working as a cop can turn the gene on, as it is usually inherited, due to any stressful incident you might be involved. However, forget getting a work related disability from any LE dept. for it. It is still too mysterious and there are no real tests that can identify it, as when you get cancer for instance.
At any rate, I am retired, but I am not dead! And I am glad to be a part of this honorable profession's group of retirees. ILM in Omaha, Nebraska

Hey, welcome aboard!
I'm also from Omaha..... good to see some locals around here. Which precinct did you work for?
I also know how painful fibromyalgia is. My mom was diagnosed with it a couple years back.

Welcome to LEF, PatrolGalOPD! CopsRCool and I make our home across the river in Council Bluffs. I'm truly sorry to hear you have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia. I am very familiar with this debilitating disease and the effects it can have on an individual (Cops, too, has been diagnosed with fibromyalgia/CFS). No doubt, you will make many new friends here. Welcome to the forum. One of my supervisors had fibromylagia. Rough thing, it is. Sit back, relax and put your feet up. Enjoy the craziness that we shall impart. And Shepards we shall be,
for thee, My Lord, for thee,
Power hath descended forth from Thy hand,
That our feet may swiftly carry out Thy Command.
So we shall flow a river forth to Thee
And teeming with souls will it ever be.
