The town where I live just hired six because they annexed a trailer park from us even though the mayor said he wouldn't (used this to nix us county deputies on a public safety tax), now he wants to hire eight more, make a street crimes unit and everything else.

Somewhat, however the individual squads are closer. The new shift that I went to is pretty close. There are seven of us on 4 different road patrol shifts. I just came out of CID/Special Operations and nobody liked anybody. We talked while at work but wouldn't have anything to do with anybody while off. Just gotta remember, small departments have the same problems are bigger ones, it's just more noticable with the smaller group.I'm ready for spring!

Not a stupid question at all, just the mayor really messed us over but acts like he's pro-police now, especially since it just helped him get re-elected. I have no problem with expanding their department, but don't shoot us down for trying to do the same thing.
My town's PD: 61 sworn, for a pop. of approx. 30,000 not counting college students (university has its' own PD)
My Sheriff's Department: 27 road deputies, 3 detectives, 28 correctional officers. Our jail stays at capacity, and we road deputies cover the other areas with the other 30,000 people in the county, at times with only 3 on a shift.
So maybe I am a little bitter.

WOW, you have 61 cops {including bosses, detectives etc} for 30,000 people? How many sq. miles?
I work in a burb of Pittsurgh, 30,000+ people, big hospital, small college, BIG public school district, 2 main roads and about 100 or more miles of regular roads, a bunch of car dealers and strip malls.
We have only 27 guys. One is leaving in a month for a state job. Budget is 29...We run about 10,000 calls a year...A monday morning lunatic, disturbed from time to time. Temporary catatonic madman on occasion..
Lightning crashes a new mother cries, her placenta falls to the floor. The angel opens her eyes, the confusion sets in before the doctor can even close the door..
The views and comments of E-man are mine and mine alone and therefore might not reflect the views of others or people in my current department. As such since this is still America I can post what I want without fear of retribution. I think.
RIP Eric

Yeah, my hometown is the only "accredited" department in Southern Illinois, seems like a little overkill but they can swarm a call. Your town sounds like my Sheriff's Office where we "finesse" our way through, until we have to do otherwise. But hey I have one thing that they don't, I can actually exercise discretion.
