    Job Description: NOTE: This is a general announcement for recruitment for Conservation Officer candidates. The examination and selection process will take approximately 6-8 months. It is estimated that approximately 8-10 officers will be hired for an Academy (12 weeks) tentatively scheduled for April 30, 2008.

    MN DNR Conservation Officer positions exist to provide public safety, resource and recreation protection response to DNR field operations, including fish, wildlife, recreation, commercial, water and wetlands, environmental crime, state parks and trails, according to applicable statutes, regulations and policies.

    Law Enforcement: Enforces all authorized statutes and regulations; enforces all authorized recreational, environmental and emerging issues statutes and regulations. Identifies needs, develops methods, implements plans to detect violations, investigates complaints, processes criminal violations, arrests violators, seizes/preserves evidence and conducts audits of NR licensed commercial operations.

    Safety and Adult Training: Recruits and maintains a competent volunteer instructor pool, provides required training aids and assures training classes are scheduled.

    Public Relations: Communicates the goals of the NR to the public by personal contact or actively seeking media and speaking opportunities. Provides advice, referrals and appropriate assistance in injured or nuisance animal complaint situations.

    Cooperative Relationships: Maintains a working relationship with other DNR Divisions/Bureaus/Regions, all law enforcement agencies and other related agencies.

    Administration and Reporting: Performs the administering duties of a Conservation Officer by maintaining a field office in the officer's residence; prepares and submits reports and remittances.

    Equipment Use, Care and Maintenance: Uses and maintains state issued equipment and expends state funds according to policy in a manner to ensure all equipment is kept functional and in a safe condition.


    Minimum Qualifications: Must be a citizen of the United States.

    Skill in performing peace officer duties; reading comprehension skill;
    oral and written communications skills; knowledge of fish and wildlife identification, habitat and other related environmental sciences.

    Ability to perform the job in adverse weather and other environmental conditions; observe and record information; read, analyze, interpret and communicate information; detect and analyze information based on sight,
    smell and/or taste, etc.

    As required by the Minnesota Peace Officer Standards and Training Board and the
    MN Department of Natural Resources, Enforcement Division the following requirements must be met in order to be considered for the Conservation Officer position.

    1. Pass a written examination and wildlife & equipment identification exercise.
    2. Pass an oral board interview & firearm safety exercise.
    3. Pass a medical examination to assure fitness for duty.
    4. Pass a psychological evaluation to assure fitness for duty.

    Meet the following by March 5, 2008:

    Posses a valid MN Peace Officer's License; OR be eligible to be licensed by the MN Peace Officers Standards and Training Board (POST); or complete basic police training and be certified as a full-time peace officer in a state or federal law enforcement agency with which Minnesota has reciprocity and pass the P.O.S.T. Board reciprocity exam; or have 5 years military police experience
    (that meets P.O.S.T. standards)and pass the P.O.S.T. reciprocity exam.

    Please review this information carefully. The date used for disqualification is August 7, 2007. Enforcement personnel will be reviewing and verifying the information submitted by applicants.

    Requires occasionally lifting articles such as 50-pound bags of feed maximum and frequently lifting and/or carrying objects such as heavy tools and file boxes. This job may require walking or standing to a significant degree on rough terrain or may involve sitting most of the time with pushing and pulling of arm and/or leg controls.

    Requires a Class D Driver's License: a single unit vehicle with a gross vehicle weight of less than 26,000 pounds. This is a basic driver's license. Operators may also tow vehicles/trailers as long as the a gross combination weight does not exceed 26,000 pounds.


    Preferred Qualifications: Bachelors Degree in Natural Resources or a closely related field.
    Law enforcement experience.
    Natural resources experience and/or training.
    Good to excellent swimming ability.
    Selection Process: Applicants will be required to pass a written examination covering reading comprehension, English language usage, public relations and a wildlife and equipment exercise. Candidates must pass the general written exam and identification excercise to be admitted to other portions of the exam/selection process. These include: passing an interview a firearms identification and safety exercise, and completion of a comprehensive background investigation. Conditional job offers will be based on passing a medical evaluation, functional capacity exam, and a psychological evaluation.

    I was talking to an officer this weekend, and he said he loves being out in nature which is why he could never work for the DNR. When are they the busiest? When everybody is out hunting...
