What is the median income in that area?
What is the real estate market like? How much square footage do you get for your buck?
    What about lateral moves?

NYC is going to hell in a handbasket, and Im sure there are plenty of cops here that are looking for a better place and a better bang for the buck.

I can't answer those questions in the current market without looking it up on real estate sites, etc, but I think an older 3-bedroom brick home in a good part of town can be had for around $120k in this area, and a new home about $180k - $225k.

There was a Kentucky trooper doing a lateral move in our Eastfield Police Academy class - He was having to take a very abbreviated course, but I don't remember how many hours it was. Here's a couple of Eastfield's contact pages where you may can find someone to answer that:

Here's a list of Texas police web sites with contact numbers where you probably find more out about lateral moves - May be better since agencies may have different requirements, want you to attend their academy, etc...

Thank you very much TxCharlie. 180K for a home is about a third of what we pay here. Sounds like a great deal too.

Thanks for the info. Will pass it along to some of the fellas looking to leave the NYPD.

Wow - You can get a REALLY nice home here for a half-million $$$! How can the average person afford to buy something like that?

The average person cant. Thats why we have a foreclosure rate among the military that is 3 times the rate among civilians. Cops in nyc are working 2 and sometimes 3 jobs just to make ends meet. And their spouses are working as well so that they can have some sort of expendable income. The real estate market in Texas sounds great. Only if the income we make here can be made there.

Another thing to look at is income tax... Texas doesn't have an income tax.

The problem is that the schools are funded mostly by our property taxes, so we do have some pretty high property taxes. On the other hand, that gives us a lot of local control over our schools, too. The lewisville LISD system is really top-notch.
