What an awesome job that would be...
I never really wanted to move too far from home because it seems like such a hassle to get back for family events, weddings, funerals, parties, holidays, etc. That, and I like the area where I live.
With that said, I'd fucking LOVE to live in Alaska. Including the winter months. I'd like a cabin, out in the woods, in the middle of fucking no where with no cells phones or cable or other technological shit.
Great minds think alike.

That would be nice. I don't know if that base pay is good for Alaska though.
Lateral opportunities may be posted soon.

I could totally be very happy doing that job.
I'm not sure they could print enough money to get me to endure a winter up there. :smow:
Dammit you're making me miss home again. That being said, one of my brothers (Ace on this board) is going through the AST academy (for a dif agency) and said it's no joke but he's enjoying it.
BTW National Geographic has a tv series starting in about 2 weeks that will be centered around AST. Not sure if anyone has heard of this already or not...
I spent two years on Kodiak island in my Coastie days, very beautiful area and the expense for items is a little more since it takes more of everything to get it there. We had it made for drinks ( :) ) and such as we got it on the base and the price was not marked up like in the town stores.
I ran across a guy on another LE board that works in some place called Kaktovik. It's not far from the Yukon border on the Arctic Ocean. Last time I heard, he works something like 2 weeks on, 2 weeks off, and they fly him in.
Yes, you military guys are able to get everything in the base stores tax free. As for the civilian stores it probably depends on whether it is trucked in or planed.
Its strange to see this post. I just finished POST a few days ago and one of my classmates was a former AST. He moved down from there to join a local S.O. here.
