Right now they're having a very tough time getting applicants.
Why?
Don't know about local -- but the fact that they don't provide any relocation assistance would be a hurdle for me.
The Mayor has been very anti-APD during his administration. He's continually tried to cut their budgets at every turn, including forcing staffing cuts (despite the fact that the city is growing and is already way under-staffed). However there is going to be a major retiring binge in 2012-2013, so they're going to be forced to do a lot more hiring in the next couple of years.
It is a great department to work though. My brother has been there for 5+ years and loves it. Pay and bennies are good, the city has a lot of activity, the training is outstanding, just right now leadership has every down. That will change though.
I almost went for it. But at 57 I'm too old for another academy and dept. Plus like JKS9199 said, no relocation. For me thats across country.
I could drive up there, solve the car problems.
That isn't the worry.
I just wonder why in this economy people aren't falling all over it.
Why are there so few current Alaskan residents who want to become LEOs, that they have to recruit LEOs from the lower 48? Just wondering.
It's a tiny population to draw from. When you figure how tiny of a percentage of the overall population is qualified and can make it through the process and then look at a state like this with such a small population it's easy to see.
Add the overwhelming problem of domestic violence, sexual abuse, and alcoholism in the state, in ratios higher than the lower 48 and you narrow the field of qualified candidates even further.
A move there would guarantee me a divorce. I do daydream about it though. Any place cooler than here would be nice.
I'd have to check in with my APD brother, but I'm pretty sure they have people who are already retired LE (APD from old union contracts and other places) and I heard once that there is a retired full bird colonel that is or was with APD. My opinion in general with jobs is to let them disqualify me and not vice versa, cause that only garuntees you won't get it:)
When I lived up there, people from down here were always saying "ALASKA? are you out of your mind?!" I think there are just so many misconceptions (ppl live in igloos, its dark six months of the year etc) that some people rule it out just on that. Plus, it IS a long way from the rest of the US
I applied, would you or anyone else on this forum have an estimated cost to relocate to this area. I would have to leave my family behind until they could sell the house and find a possible teaching job up there(if I was accepted). Would you know how the lateral program works, and is there a waiver for recently unemployed police officers who were laid off. I live in Pennsylvania and there looks like there is no relief coming anytime soon.
I relocated with another agency. We did all our testing in one week. It cost about $2,000 for the hotel, food, and rental car.
My agency paid to move me and my family, I don't think APD will do that. It ain't cheap. The less you bring, the better. If you can load your own U-Haul and bring your stuff that's going to be the cheapest, but most difficult.
APD doesn't have a lateral program. Everyone goes through their academy. But it is not a residential academy, you will commute every day. I hear it's not bad.
Their website says they do...
APD Lateral Program
Academy is 8wks vs 24wks, but looks like the hiring process etc is the same.
I have old info. They used to make everyone go through their academy.
I would love to move to Anchorage...however, Autumn wants nothing to do with Alaska...lol
