Cool Dallas Police Offering $10,000 Sign-On Bonus to New Hires

Join The Force And Make A Difference And Receive A $10,000 BONUS!

    http://recruiting.dallaspolice.net/index.cfm?subnav=0

    NOTE:

Update 5/8/06: Ok here's the answer I finally got from the DPD on the dispersal of the $10,000 sign-on bonus - And they also told me that they need 200 applicants by October!

you'll get 6,000 after the academy and 4,000 after you pass probation.....which is 1 1/2 years.....
Update 5/4/06: I just found out from the Channel 11 web site that this is not a lump-sum bonus. So if what they say is true, it's almost false advertising, because it's really just an 82-week pay bump:

    http://cbs11tv.com/topstories/local_...116185753.html

The city council agrees there's a need for more officers. The members voted unanimously to pay new recruits a $10,000 incentive bonus. It will be spread over 82 weeks as both a means of keeping them on the job and to avoid entering into individual work contracts with them.
Still it's an extra $121 per week on average over 82 weeks - better than a poke in the eye.

Tossing that much cash at people = where's the problem? Something's not right if that's required to meet recruiting expectations. Either the pay is low or the area majorly sucks. Or both.

I think starting pay as I recall is around $37,000. Every Dallas officer I ever met seemed extremely professional.

    Edited to add:

I was low. First column is without degree, second column with:

    Apprentice $39,030 $40,230
    Probationary $39,420 $40,620
    Police Officer $41,690 $42,890
    2 Year $43,754 $44,950
    3 Year $45,933 $47,133
    5 Year $48,249 $49,449
    7 Year $50,657 $51,857
    9 Year $53,179 $54,379
    11 Year $55,862 $57,062
    13 Year $58,637 $59,837
    15 Year $61,572 $62,772

I have an extended family member in the DPD - He really likes Chief Kunkle.

And they finally got cages in their cars!

They're overworked & underpaid, and a lot of them are working in communities that don't appreciate them, but their DROP retirement program is supposed to be good.

I agree - you can't appreciate Dallas until you've lived here a while then go to Chicago or something - then you say "why the hell did I leave Dallas!!!"

Actually the northern suburbs are what's rocking now - Especially Lewisville, Frisco, Plano, Allen, and that area...

Best of all I don't need no stinkin' taxi cab or bus - I can go wherever I need to go in my car, thank you very much, and my car tag is only $50/year, no State income tax... and (pay attention Welpe): We can buy 15-round magazines and have Shall-Issue CHL's

So true, so true. I'd have no hesitation about leaving DC to go back to Dallas as soon as the opportunity arises. You're right about the northern suburbs, too. The Grapevine area suburbs are nice too, though a longer commute.

I never really considered Dallas and Houston as really Texas.

The pay scale posted isn't all that bad. A lot of depts are having trouble recruiting. We pay pretty well and I know they are willing to pay up to 5 grand in moving expenses for successful applicants.

Thumbs up Finally, a answer from the DPD re: the Sign-On Bonus Dispersal

Ok here's the answer I finally got from the DPD on the dispersal of the $10,000 sign-on bonus, after a couple of tries - And they said that they need 200 applicants by October!!!:

you'll get 6,000 after the academy and 4,000 after you pass probation.....which is 1 1/2 years.....

Subject: Re: Details on sign on bonus

According to reports I've received, the $10,000 bonus is spread out over
    several months or years.

Yet your web site says receive "A $10,000 bonus", implying a lump-sum
dispersal - and does not mention the details of how it will be spread out.

    Please explain

    Thanks
    Charlie

And they have 9 more openings now to add to the 200 they already had

(The Chief fired 9 officers for everything from exposing themselves to being passed out drunk in their cars this past week)
