Durham NC is located in central North Carolina with a population of 204,845 (As of July 2005). The city of Durham is a fast growing city with a very diverse population. Home to Research Triangle Park (RTP), Duke University, NC Central University, and the famous Durham Bulls, Durham has something to offer for everyone. Durham has a vibrant and growing downtown scene and lies at the crossroads of two major interstates. (I-40 & I-85).

The Police department has over 500 sworn members and many specialized divisions. Uniform patrol is comprised of 5 districts and is the backbone of the department. Uniform Patrol is supplemented by a Criminal Investigation Division, Special Operations that has Vice/Narcotics Investigators and 3 squads of Gang investigators, A large K9 division, Park Patrol, Public Housing, and Crime Prevention.

The department offers a competitive salary for the region and offers education incentive bonuses. The department also has a need for bilingual officers and offers bonuses for those fluent in spanish and sign language. The department also gives it's employees 12 paid holidays per year on top of accrued vacation time and sick time, that can be used towards an early retirement.

The department also has a rotating DuPont schedule for uniform patrol. It is comprised of 12 hour shifts. This allows fo a 7 consecutive day break once a month. This schedule allows officers generous family time along with the ability to work part time jobs sanctioned through the department.
